The Shrek One is a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) designed and produced by as a joint venture between the Ukrainian auto manufacturer KrAZ and the UAE-based STREIT Group company. [1] The vehicle is named after the fictional character of the same name from the 2001 animated film Shrek .
The Shrek One was first unveiled at the Eurosatory in Paris in June of 2014. [2] The Shrek then appeared at other exhibitions, such as the Defence Vehicle Dynamics in the UK. [2]
Shortly after these appearances, the Ukrainian Armed Forces issued their first contracts for a total of eight Shrek One MRAPs in 2014, with the first four vehicles being delivered in early 2015, while the last four were delivered later that year. [1] [2]
The Shrek One is based on the chassis of the KrAZ-5233 truck. [3] It utilizes a traditional vehicle layout, with the engine located in the front with the crew compartment behind. The front of the vehicle accommodates one driver and one commander, while the rear of the vehicle can hold up to 10 occupants. [4] The vehicle is heavily armored, incorporating STANAG 4569 level 2 armor on the body, with extra plating on the underside for protection against mines and IEDs. [4]
The Shrek MRAP consists of two main variants: The Shrek One and the Shrek-M. The Shrek-M incorporates more modern equipment and systems, along with an improved headlight system and improved armor. [2] Additional variants include the Shrek One MCV and the Shrek-MIV, which are designed for mine clearance. They are equipped with heavier armor and a mine disposal arm which is controlled from inside the cabin. There is also an armored ambulance variant, the Shrek One AMB. [5]
The Shrek One saw limited combat use by the Ukrainian National Guard during the War in Donbas. [6] Notably, the Shrek appeared in Mariupol in use by the Azov Brigade in 2021.
Starting in 2013, Malian Shrek-One MCVs were deployed for mine-clearing duties in support of UN peacekeeping forces during the UN intervention in Mali (MINUSMA). [7]
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Shrek One was deployed with front line units, including during the defense of Kiev and the Battle of Bucha. One unit that is known to operate the Shrek is the 45th Operational Regiment of the Ukrainian National Guard. [8]
In 2022, during the Siege of Mariupol, at least one Shrek One was captured by Russian forces. [9]
