Krieg (German for "War") is an American black metal band originally from Somers Point, New Jersey. [1]
The band formed in 1995, initially as Imperial, [2] [3] changing name to Krieg in 1997 [3] to avoid confusion with other bands named Imperial. [2] Krieg released their début album Rise of the Imperial Hordes in 1998 and also recorded a second studio album called Sono Lo Scherno , which was not released at the time. Some of the tracks were used on the split with Kult ov Azazel and the compilation The Black Plague. [4]
In 2001, Krieg played with Godless North and Inquisition on the North American Black Metal Invasion tour through Germany, where they were supported by the German band Secrets of the Moon. [5] At Krieg's show at Die Festung in Bitterfeld on December 8, 2001, Imperial dedicated his set to Kanwulf of Nargaroth, [6] who was beaten up by NSBM band Absurd's vocalist Ronald Wolf Möbus for threatening to kill the latter's son (who was about one year old at the time). [7] [8] The show was recorded and released on the live EP Kill Yourself or Someone You Love . [6]
In 2003, Krieg released splits with Antaeus and Satanic Warmaster, who, according to Imperial, "fit into my holy trinity of current black metal bands" together with American band Black Witchery, [9] as well as a split with Goat Semen, Necroplasma and Nazxul, and one with Open Grave. The band also released the album The Black House , backed up by a tour with Demoncy and Abazagorath. [3] [9]
In 2004, Krieg announced a final album called The Harmony Virus. [2] [9] Imperial explained he would disband Krieg "[b]ecause, for now, I have almost reached the goals I have set out for myself. Perhaps KRIEG could return after I have pursued my next projects to their fullest. We shall see." He also announced a split single with the Canadian band Lust. [9] In 2005, Blue Miasma was released as Krieg's final album. [1] The album was recorded at Winterblut Studio (Germany), Studio One (USA), and Orchard Studio (USA) in 2005, and released via No Colours Records and Darkland Records.
In 2006 Krieg, with Noctuary as tour mates and backing band, toured the West Coast of the US, with added dates in Mexico. The band split up in 2006, and reformed once again in 2008 and played shows in L.A. and San Francisco.[ citation needed ] They have recently released a split and are working on a full-length.[ citation needed ]
In 2014 Krieg was to release its second record on Candlelight Records titled "Transient".
The band's frontman, Imperial, was inspired to form Krieg by "[a] need to express the emotions inside me, which were empowering, crippling and consuming. […] For me, it's always been about my vision and my word. The only way to express that in perfection is to do it without any outside interference unless permitted." Imperial is in a "constant struggle for control in my life", including a minor nervous breakdown in 2004 and "a heavy dosage of Valium to control a very violent outburst". [9] Imperial is "heavily influenced by his dementia and nightmares". [10] Beherit, Archgoat, Darkthrone, Forgotten Woods, Demoncy, Judas Iscariot, Lugubrum, Pest, Satanic Warmaster, Black Crucifixion, Hellhammer, Burzum, Profanatica and Havohej "have assisted in forming my music background", whereas influences "in the non traditional sense I am extremely influenced by Lou Reed's 'Berlin' album, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Danzig/Samhain, early Laibach, Incantation (only with Craig Pillard), Earth (us), and a lot of fucking doom". [2] Krieg have "never been about the usual Satanic black metal subjects, but rather a despondent vision of morbid nihilism". [11]
According to MusicMight , who called them an "uncompromising underground Black Metal legend", Krieg "deal in the rawest of Black Metal delivered in a style and tempo all of their own". [3] Rock Hard journalist Björn Thorsten Jaschinski called Krieg a productive band and described their early works as chaotic, sloppily played black metal inspired by Profanatica and Havohej. [12] In his introduction to an interview with Lord Imperial, Ryan Harding wrote that American black metal bands are "arguably at our best when following the chaotic standard established by the likes of Beherit and the raw evil of Profanatica, as demonstrated by Demoncy and, of course, Krieg". [4]
Compared to earlier releases, The Black House, "whilst equally aggressive, leaned towards a more groove laden and some might say accessible approach", though "[t]he caustic primitivism of […] early recordings is still very much inherent". [9] The album's lyrics deal with "the dissection of my psyche", rebellion, "descent, anger turned within", "one way to envision how death feels from the perspective of the dying", hopelessness/helplessness, betrayal, sexual depravity and murder without the burden of conscience. [9] The Patrick Bateman EP is "a recording unlike any Krieg recording, with absolutely no regard for musical ideas but rather sheer violence and insanity, closer to ambient done completely with metal instruments. When this is finally released it will shock people and hurt a lot of feelings, but that's always been a positive thing for me." [9] According to Blabbermouth, Blue Miasma "is the longest KRIEG work — with a running time of about one hour — and continues to explore different moods and atmopsheres [sic!] that were begun with 2004's 'The Black House'". [1] The album had been announced by Imperial as "the most depressing, experimental and nastiest Krieg release ever" [9] and is based on nightmares that Imperial has experienced since childhood, "though each year with each new trauma only grew more and more macabre. This album needed to have everything audible in order to give the listener a piece of what I go through constantly. Therapy through music, better living through chemistry." [2]
According to Jaschinski, the chaotic, sloppily played style would still be dominating their later album The Isolationist, though the album included ambient elements and was more experimental. [12]

Mütiilation was a French black metal project, traditionally known as a group, but later slimmed to a solo act that consisted solely of founder William "Meyhna'ch" Roussel who maintained activity under the name until its closing in 2017. Mütiilation has released six full-length albums and appeared on several EPs and compilations.
Leviathan is an American black metal solo project that started in 1998 by Jef Whitehead under the pseudonym Wrest. On all Leviathan albums, Wrest records all instruments and performs vocals on his own.
Satanic Warmaster is a Finnish black metal project from Lappeenranta, Finland, consisting of the sole musician "Werwolf". Penttilä began recording under this name in 1998. Satanic Warmaster has sold tens of thousands of albums worldwide without the support of any major distribution companies or record labels. The band has toured around the world in countries such as Finland, Germany, Russia, Mexico, Japan and Italy. In November 2014, Satanic Warmaster's album "Fimbulwinter" reached the Finnish official chart on place #14 and the Rumba specialized stores' chart on place #2. In 2023 Satanic Warmaster was number one two times on the Finnish album charts for physical albums sold, as well as fourth on the album chart that covers digital releases too.
Baptism is a black metal band from Finland. The band was formed in 1998 by vocalist/guitarist Lord Sargofagian and drummer Demonium. The summer of that year the band released their first demo, Satanic Rituals, although very few copies were released. Following a two-year hiatus the band released their second demo, Sons of Ruin & Terror, in 2000. Similar to the last demo the release was limited. After the addition of bassist Slaughterer the band released their first full-length album, The Beherial Midnight, on June 12, 2002. The band release three more albums in 2004; a split CD with Uncreation's Dawn, and the EPs Wisdom & Hate and Black Ceremony. Slaughterer and Demonium left the band following the release of Wisdom & Hate, leaving Lord Sargofagian as the only official member. The band has continued with various session musicians, and have released four more full-length albums.
Xasthur is the project of American musician Scott "Malefic" Conner. Conner formed Xasthur in 1995 and released eight studio albums of black metal by 2010, when he announced the end of the project. However, he began using the name once again in 2015 to instead perform acoustic neofolk music. The first album with this new style was entitled Subject to Change, released in 2016.
Kult ov Azazel is an American black metal band, briefly known as Azazel.
Nachtmystium was an American psychedelic black metal band formed by Blake Judd, formerly known as Azentrius, and Pat McCormick. The band's name is derived from the German word Nacht meaning "night", and the made-up term mystium which resembles the Latin adjective mysticum. Judd and McCormick combined the words to create the band's name, which they state means "Encompassing Darkness". Nachtmystium released multiple critically praised albums between 2005 and 2012, including Instinct: Decay (2005), Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I (2008), and Silencing Machine (2012).
Twilight is an American black metal supergroup formed in 2005 and originally commissioned by the Swedish underground label Total Holocaust Records. Members of the band are all a part of well known projects within the black metal genre or otherwise including Xasthur, Leviathan, Krieg, Isis, Nachtmystium, Draugar, Minsk, The Atlas Moth and Sonic Youth.
Blake Judd is an American musician and co-founder of now-defunct Battle Kommand Records. Formerly the lead vocalist and frontman of the metal band Nachtmystium, Judd also contributed to musical acts and projects such as Twilight, Krieg, and Hate Meditation. He previously performed under the stage name "Azentrius". Judd's heroin addiction was publicly exposed in 2013 after he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft. His reputation was further damaged when fans, band mates, and business partners openly accused Judd of conducting fraudulent business practices. Judd later admitted to deceiving fans and left the music industry in 2014. He later reunited Nachtmystium in 2017 to perform two live shows and record a new studio album before dissolving the band in 2020.
Instinct: Decay is the third full-length album by Nachtmystium. It was rated the 4th best album of the year by Decibel Magazine. The album was released on CD by Battle Kommand Records and on Vinyl by Profound Lore Records and Autopsy Kitchen Records.
Strength and Honour is the first studio album by Finnish black metal band Satanic Warmaster. It was released in November 2001 through Northern Heritage. It was reissued twice by Northern Heritage in 2003 and 2004, both pressings limited to 1000 copies. The original LP version comes with a bonus track, officially untitled, also referred to as "Legion Werewolf". The keyboard outro to "Night of Retribution" was originally intended to be the intro for Satanic Warmaster's unreleased "Black Metal Kommando" debut album. The album intro is an uncredited piece taken from the SPK album Zamia Lehmanni: Songs of Byzantine Flowers. The album cover features the “Spirit of Wolf” emblem by the band Black Draugwath, and is now used with their permission after misunderstandings after the original release.
No Colours Records is a German mail order and record label from Mügeln specialised in black metal.
Azaghal is a Finnish black metal band, currently signed to Moribund Records. They were established in 1995.
Archgoat is a Finnish black metal band formed in 1989 by twin brothers Ritual Butcherer on guitar and Lord Angelslayer on bass and vocals. It was one of Finland's first black metal bands along with Barathrum, Impaled Nazarene and Beherit. The members of Archgoat openly identify with the philosophy of Satanism and the occult as expressed in their lyrical content, which also consists of anti-Christian themes.
Blue Miasma is the fifth studio album by black metal band Krieg. Krieg temporarily split up after the release of this album but reunited in 2007. Darkland Records released a vinyl version limited to 888 copies; the first 300 copies were blue.
