Kyle Douglas Jennermann, better known as Kulas is a Canadian-Filipino travel vlogger.
Kyle Jennermann has traveled to multiple countries (29 countries in Europe and Southeast Asia) prior to settling in the Philippines. [2]
His last stop would be in Hong Kong. He went to the city in 2012 to work as an outdoor recreation educator. He would befriend his Filipino colleagues and learn about the Philippines. [2]
BecomingFilipino is the name of Kulas' vlogging project which features his activities across the Philippines. He runs a YouTube channel and an Instagram account for this. [3] He has previously maintained a standalone blog website where his followers can suggest activities for him. [4]
Kulas would feature in his own television show titled Becoming Filipino Your Travel Blog which first aired at ANC in August 2016. [5]
Kulas' would first visit the Philippines in January 2013. He was still employed in Hong Kong at the time so his visits remain sporadic for a while. One noted visit was in November 2013, when he assisted in relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). [2] He would commit more to his project when he quit his job in Hong Kong by around 2015, deciding to live in Cagayan de Oro which serves as his hub for his travels. [5]
Kulas' content on his vlog features his experiences in visiting different parts of the Philippines as well as the culture of the relevant localities. [6] One of his most viewed videos featured the lantaka weapon. [7]
Kulas has helped in relief operations for victims of various other typhoons that impacted the Philippines like he did for Haiyan back in 2013. [6]
By February 2023, he has visited 81 out of 82 provinces with Sulu the only unvisited province. [7] In March 2024, he made his final visit to Sulu.
Kulas is a native of Comox Valley in British Columbia, Canada. [8] Having been born around 1987or1988 in Vancouver Island, he has Canadian citizenship. [9]
He received Filipino citizenship through an Act of Congress, specifically through Republic Act No. 11955 in 2023. [10]
His naturalization process began when Senate Bill No. 1509 was filed on November 14, 2022 by Senator Joel Villanueva in the Senate. [11] This was followed by House Bill No. 1764, the House of Representatives counterpart of the proposed measure which was approved in February 2023. This bill was authored by Biñan Representative Marlyn Alonte. [7] The two bills were consolidated in May 2023 [11] and eventually was signed into law by President Bongbong Marcos in August 4, 2023. He formalized his Filipino citizenship when he took his oath allegiance on September 13, 2023. [12]

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center recognized Fengshen as the seventh tropical depression, the sixth tropical storm, and fifth typhoon of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season.

Typhoon Nesat, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Pedring, was the most powerful tropical cyclone to directly impact China since 2005. It also struck the Philippines during the 2011 Pacific typhoon season, killing 98 people. It is the 17th named storm, the 11th severe tropical storm, the 7th typhoon and overall, the 30th tropical cyclone to be monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA) during the year. Nesat came exactly two years after Typhoon Ketsana made landfall in the Philippines as the most devastating typhoon in the 2009 Pacific typhoon season with a damage of US$1.09 billion and 747 fatalities. Nesat was also the first of twin tropical cyclones to batter the Philippines within one week during September 2011, the second was Nalgae.

Typhoon Rita, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Kading, was the most powerful tropical cyclone during the 1978 Pacific typhoon season and one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record. A long-lived and destructive tropical cyclone, Rita began its journey east of the Marshall Islands and rapidly moved westwards, becoming a typhoon on October 20. Rita continued rapid intensification and attained super typhoon status and later an atmospheric pressure of 878 mbar (25.9 inHg) on October 25. Rita struck the Philippines overnight on October 26 and entered the South China Sea as a minimal typhoon. Rita caused extreme damage and more than 300 deaths.

Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. Upon making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. It is one of the deadliest Philippine typhoons on record, killing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. In terms of JTWC-estimated 1-minute sustained winds, Haiyan is tied with Meranti in 2016 for being the second strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record, only behind Goni of 2020. As of January 2014, bodies were still being found. Haiyan was also the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2013.
In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, the Philippines received numerous messages of condolence and offers of assistance from a range of international leaders.
The Philippines Charitable Giving Assistance Act allowed Americans to retroactively claim tax deductions for charitable donations made between January 1, 2014 and April 15, 2014 as donations made in the year 2013, which were made for the relief of victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and nearby areas, after the Federal Trade Commission and State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs published advisories concerning Typhoon Haiyan charity scams. Under the law, the Internal Revenue Service accepted phone bills in lieu of documentation from 501(c)3 organizations for those donations made for the relief of victims of the typhoon. The typhoon did an estimated $1 billion in damage and killed thousands of people.
Typhoon Sally, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Aring, was a powerful tropical cyclone that brought widespread impacts during its week-long trek across the western Pacific in September 1964. The strongest tropical cyclone of the 1964 Pacific typhoon season and one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record, and among the strongest typhoons ever recorded, with one-minute maximum sustained winds of 315 km/h (196 mph) as estimated by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Sally first became a tropical cyclone near the Marshall Islands on September 3, organizing into a tropical depression and then a tropical storm later that day. On September 4, Sally intensified into a typhoon and struck southern Guam the next day. Widespread agricultural damage occurred in the island's southern regions, with the banana crop suffering the costliest losses; the damage toll from crops and property exceeded $115,000. Sally continued to intensify on its west-northwestward trek, and reached its peak strength on September 7 over the Philippine Sea.

Pope Francis made a pastoral and state visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2015. He was the third pontiff to visit the Philippines after Paul VI in 1970 and John Paul II in 1981 and 1995, and officially the first papal visit in the 21st century and 3rd millennium after the title was originally scheduled for World Meeting of Families twelve years earlier in 2003 but postponed due to John Paul II was unable to attend because of the progression of his Parkinson's disease. Besides Manila, Francis visited Tacloban and Palo, Leyte, to encourage the victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) and Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby). The Filipinos nicknamed Francis Lolo Kiko as a term of endearment, which he commended. Around 6–7 million attended Francis' final Papal Mass at Luneta, surpassing the crowd at World Youth Day 1995 in the same venue and making it the largest papal crowd in history. The theme of Francis' 2015 visit was "Mercy and Compassion".

Typhoon Mangkhut, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Ompong, was a powerful and catastrophic Category 5 tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage in Guam, the Philippines, and South China in September 2018. It was the strongest typhoon to strike Luzon since Megi in 2010, and the strongest to make landfall anywhere in the Philippines since Meranti in 2016. Mangkhut was also the strongest typhoon to affect Hong Kong since Ellen in 1983.
