As per the 2001 census, Kumaramangalam had a total population of 1315 with 676 males and 639 females. The sex ratio was 945. The literacy rate was 72.69%.

Salem District is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The district is now divided into Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal as individual districts. Salem is the district headquarters and other major towns in the district include Mettur, Thammampatti, Attur, Omalur, Sangagiri and Edappadi. Tanittamiḻ Iyakkam is a linguistic-purity movement in Tamil literature which attempts to avoid loanwords from Sanskrit, English and other languages. Phanindranath Rangarajan Kumaramangalam was a prominent politician of the Indian National Congress and later the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Member of parliament, Lok Sabha from the Salem constituency from 1984 to 1996 and Tiruchirapalli constituency from 1998 to 2000. He served as the Minister of State for Law, Justice and Company Affairs in the P. V. Narasimha Rao government from July 1991 to December 1993 and as the Union Minister for Power in the Vajpayee Government from 1998 to 2000. He was the grandson of former Chief Minister of Madras, P. Subbarayan and the nephew of former Indian Chief of Army, General P. P. Kumaramangalam.

Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is a Tamil Nadu government medical college established in 1986. The college is in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, and is named after former Iron and Steel Minister of India Mohan Kumaramangalam. It is recognised by the Medical Council of India. The school enrolls 100 MBBS and 102 postgraduate medical students. Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Nursing College is situated on the campus in a separate building.

Armamalai Cave is known for its Indian cave paintings. It is to the west of Malayampattu village which is 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Ambur in the Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu.
