Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) is a Biomedical research institute located at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. It is a joint venture between the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany. [1] It was founded in 1998 and has about 250-300 workers. The centre's objective is to develop a series of world research programs through the acquisition of research grants. [2] The center also tests and confirms samples for COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana. The facility was made one of the many others in Ghana certified to undertake COVID-19 tests in the country. [8]

History

KCCR is an international platform for biomedical research and a nonprofit research centre in Ghana and globally. [9] It is based on the campus of KNUST in Kumasi in the Ashanti region in the country. [10] [11] It has close cooperation with the Medical School and other related facilities making it develop into a research centre of the College of Health Sciences. [12]

Supports

StanChart Bank supported the KCCR with PCR to expand testing capabilities for the fight against Coronavirus. [10] The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors also supported the centre with GH¢100,000. [13]

The College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology comprises the Faculties of Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Veterinary Medicine and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in tropical medicine (KCCR). It attained the status of a college by a change in the University Statutes that came into being in January 2005. Prior to this time, the components of the college existed separately as the Faculty of Pharmacy and School of Medical Sciences.

Richard Kwarteng said he took inspiration from the veronica bucket when he and his team was inventing the solar wash.

Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund is an initiative by the Government of Ghana (GOG) to help fight the novel corona virus pandemic. The fund was established by ten businessmen and women to raise GHC 100,000 to support the effort of the government by providing intervention to support the public who have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana either economically, socially and politically.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ghanaian government response to the COVID-19 pandemic</span> Actions by the Ghanaian government on COVID-19 pandemic

The Government of Ghana initially responded to the virus through a nationwide disinfection and fumigation exercise which began in April 2020. In order to curb the spread of the virus, the government enforced lockdowns, aggressive contact tracing, public bans and social measures such as encouraging the wearing of face masks. By April, it began the gradual reopening of the country; lifting all lockdowns while maintaining protocols such as social distancing. Throughout the pandemic, the government partnered with the private sector in order to roll out economic reliefs and recovery programs as a result of the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's economy. There was also an expansion of medical facilities and the improvement of testing logistics.
