Kurkse is a cargo ship which was ordered by Estonian Shipping Company in 1997. It was the fifth and last ship of her class.

The ship route was Tallinn-Stockholm-Antwerpen-Rotterdam-Tallinn when it was in ESCO service. [1] Kurkse was one of the last cargo ships that was deleted from Estonian shipregister and her sister ship Kalana was deleted one month later. Since then there are no more cargo ships sailing under Estonian flag. [2]

Incidents

On 9 March 2007, Kurkse collided with Bulgarian flagged ship MSC Bulgaria during maneuvering in Hamburg port. No people were hurt and both ships suffered only minimal damage. According to German police, Kurkse caused 2 meter long crack in the side of the MSC Bulgaria and Kurkse deck building was easily damaged. [3]

Between 1940 and 1991 the company was part of the Soviet Union Merchant Fleet.

<i>Suur Tõll</i> (icebreaker) 1914 Estonian ship

Suur Tõll is an Estonian steam-powered icebreaker preserved in the Estonian Maritime Museum in Tallinn. She was originally built for the Russian Empire in 1914 by AG Vulcan in Stettin, Germany, as Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich. In 1917, she was taken over by the Bolsheviks and renamed Volynets. However, in 1918 she was captured by Finland and served as Wäinämöinen until 1922, when she was handed over to Estonia according to the Treaty of Tartu and renamed Suur Tõll. When Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, the icebreaker rejoined the Soviet fleet and was again named Volynets. She remained in service until 1985.
