Kushata Kwemoyo is a 2018 Zimbabwean drama film produced and directed by Shem Zemura. [1] The film stars Kudzai Msungo, Charles Muzemba and Gamuchirai Duve in the main lead roles. The film was set in the backdrop of communal lands of Murewa and Harare's affluent suburbs. [2]

Chiedza (Gamuchirai Duve) who was abused during her childhood by her step-mother later becomes a rough and tough woman who hates her family. [3]

The film was first premiered on 22 February 2018 in Zimbabwe. [4] It was also screened at few international film festivals. [5] The film was screened at the 2019 Zimbabwe International Film Festival. It won Best Southern African film at the 2021 Sotambe International Film and Arts Festival in Zambia. [6]

The film was also chosen as one of the African films to be streamed via Mnet Afro-Cinema, a pop-up channel which was launched by MultiChoice in order to showcase and celebrate the contemporary African films during the COVID-19 pandemic. [7] It was supposed to be streamed on 26 May 2021 as part of MultiChoice's Africa Day celebration week but had it to be postponed due to technical faults. [8] [9]

Set in contemporary middle class society of Harare, the film stars Tendaiishe Chitima, Fungai Majaya and Tehn Diamond. Production of the film was constantly hit with power failures, budget constraints, anti-government protests and riots which erupted during the final stages of the Presidency of Robert Mugabe. It became the first film to be released after the Zimbabwe Mugabe era which lasted for nearly 40 years. The film also became the first Zimbabwean film to be streamed on Netflix. It received international media attention since its release on the Netflix platform in June 2020. It is only the second Zimbabwean film to receive international attention after Neria. The film is hailed as one of the finest ever films in the Cinema of Zimbabwe after Neria and Yellow Card and opened to extremely positive response from Zimbabweans.
