"Labyrinth" is the third single from Icarus , the debut EP from Kero Kero Bonito singer Sarah Midori Perry's solo project Cryalot. "Labyrinth" was released 31 August 2022, cowritten by Perry and producer Jennifer Walton, and came with a music video directed by Joshua Homer. [1] [2] [3]

Style

Perry described the song's narrative as being "about hope and our ability to dream even when we are trapped in our own reality", "draw[ing] parallels between the myth of Icarus and the confines of our own emotional landscapes." [4] [5] Pitchfork's Sam Goldner calls the song "a tender power ballad whose glitching, yeule-y intro explodes into a cybernetic wall of rich, blasting synth chords" which showcases Perry's "mastery of tension and release". [6] Slant Magazine's Eric Mason says the song "evoke[s] M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming with [its] wistful meditations and sonic grandeur." [7] Spectrum Culture's Aymeric Dubois wrote that on the song, Perry "uses a melancholy tone to mesmerize through catharsis, while her ethereal voice melts perfectly on the atmospheric keys of the instrumental." [8]

Music video

The Joshua Homer-directed video is set in an abandoned building in Bethnal Green. BroadwayWorld's Michael Major describes as "dream-like" and says it "conjures a shadowy, woozy setting for Sarah and Jennifer Walton ... to play out the song's hopeful narrative." [4]

The EP marks another change in terms of the band's musical style; eschewing many of the guitar-driven shoegaze influences of TOTEP and Time 'n' Place, instead drawing heavily on synth-pop and dream pop. Lyrically, the EP explores concepts of society, war, religion, and environmentalism. The band released a follow-up to the EP on 21 April 2021. Both EPs along with an additional track, "Gateway", were merged into a compilation album, titled simply Civilisation and released on 10 September 2021.

"Vigilante Shit" is a song written and recorded by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her tenth studio album Midnights (2022). Produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff, the track is a dark pop tune with elements of industrial and hip hop. Its minimalistic production is driven by trap beats composed of pulsing snare drums and light bass and electronic tones. The lyrics are about a noirish vengeance declaration, taking aim at an enemy and encouraging other women to do the same.
