Lajvardina-type ceramics were developed in the 13th century following the Mongol invasion of Persia. It was produced throughout the Ilkhanate reign. It is characterized by its deep blue color and often features geometric patterns or foliage inlaid with gold leaf. The style was created using overglaze enamel. An initial layer of dark blue glaze, produced from cobalt, was applied, followed by another layer, often gold, on which the details were painted. [1] It was primarily produced in Kashan, a center for ceramic production and lusterware in the 12th and early 13th centuries. [2] The style was continuously used for tiles and ornamental objects from the 1260s C.E. until the mid-14th century, when production dropped significantly, coinciding with the fall of the Ilkhanate in 1335. [3]
The term collectors term "lajvardina" references the Persian name of Lapis Lazuli, a precious blue mineral between azure and ultramarine. The term lajvardina is a misnomer, as these ceramics are characterized by their use of cobalt blue, which visually imitates lapis lazuli. [4]
In the 1180s, Kashan produced some of the finest ceramics made in medieval Islam. Kashan Potters had perfected the lustre technique, invented overglaze enameling, and explored breakthroughs in underglaze painting. The production of these lustre wares grew tremendously. The wares of Kashan, in particular, were traded throughout Central Asia, Iran, Syria, and Egypt. Kashan widely produced these wares until the 13th century, when the devastation of the Mongols' wrath caused production to freeze for almost 40 years. [1]
The Mongol armies brought on an onslaught of unparalleled violence and destruction, bringing central Asia to a standstill. We can see these effects when examining the ceramic artifacts in collections. [5]
Kashan lustreware is regularly dated until the early A.D. 1220s; coinciding with the Mongolian invasion. Production stops during this time. Then it starts up again in A.D. 1260s. At this point, the Mongols had overthrown the last Abbasid caliph, taken Baghdad, and installed themselves as the Ilkhanid rulers of Iran. [3]
Once the Mongol Ilkhanid established its rule, ceramics production began again. Although all the pre-Mongol types of ceramics continued to be made, the effect on decoration styles in Iran was marked. In lustreware, tiles appear to have become the predominant output. Ilkhanid overglaze enamels are known as Lajvardina in recognition of the distinct cobalt blue glaze it sports. These lajvardina pieces are most often adorned with sprawling foliage motifs. [6]
Dated pieces tell us that Mongolian lajvardina was produced during the second half of the 13th century and into the 14th century during the Ilkanid dynasty. The dramatic decline in numbers and production quality of lustre pieces dated in the 15th century indicates reduction of this method. The correlation between the method's decline and the end of the Ilkhanid rule in A.D. 1335 is not directly causal. [5]
Lajvardina ceramics were usually made from a material known as fritware or stone paste. This is made by combining clay with crushed quartz fragments, which leads to a whiter, although depending on the size of the quartz, rougher and less plastic (easy to shape) medium. Depending on the firing process, the clay and quartz fuse together with the glaze to create tough objects. [7]

Most knowledge about the production of Lajvardina wares derives from Abu'l Qasim al-Kashani well-known treatise on ceramics from 1301. Qasim descended from a line of potters and gave an account of creating pottering both in his past and present, which coincided with the high point of lajvardina ware production. [5]
Scholars rely on Qasim to understand the production of fritware, glazes, and firing techniques. [6] Through Qasim, it is known to mix the dark blue underglaze characteristic of lajvardina ware. One had to "Add ten dirhams of Sulaimani lajvard" (meaning cobalt) to the crushed glass and water glaze. To mix the lajvardina turquoise glaze, "they add for every man of ground tin ten dirhams of ground roasted cooper." [2] Experts have long interpreted Qasim's use of lajvard or sulaimani in the treatise to refer to cobalt and that Qasam uses lajvard to reference the look of lapis lazuli stone rather than it being used as part of the glaze. While specialists generally agree that cobalt is the material used to obtain the blue color of the glaze. Philippe Colomban has in the analysis of one an Iranian jug from the thirteenth century, shown the presence of lapis lazuli being used in a glaze. [4] [8]
Production location
Kashan is generally thought to be the center of production of this type of ceramic.
The Mongol conquest of Iran saw the disappearance of the illustrated scenes of
Mina'i (also known as haft-rang) ceramics to give way to denser and less figural compositions.
Lajvardina wares are usually characterized by a dark blue or turquoise underglaze, however there are also examples of white or more green tinted ceramics. [9] The second layer of glaze, which adds the abstracted decoration, is often white, red and black, with inlaid pieces of cut gold leaf. [10] [11]
The decoration of Lajvardina ceramics is almost exclusively non-figurative. [12] Designs became more geometric and patterned following the mongule invasion. [13] The influence of the Mongols also caused some of the Chinese motifs that are commonly seen in Lajvardina ceramics, for example phoenixes and scrollwork, as well as plants like lotuses, chrysanthemums and peonies. [9] [13] It is thought that these influences came not directly from Chinese made ceramics but from the designs seen on fabric.
According to Soustiel, about a third of the lajvardina type shaped pieces are radial type compositions. [15]
Most examples of Lajvardina vessels were made for decorative use. [13] There are many examples of Lajvardina tiles, and these were often used to tile the outsides of buildings. Tiles are seen as the better preserved examples of the design style. [9]
Lajvardina-type ceramics were used around 1334 for the coverings of the mausoleum of Qutham ibn Abbas in the necropolis of Shah-i-Zinda, near Samarkand. [16]
Takht-e Soleymān, is an archaeological site in West Azerbaijan, Iran dating back to Sasanian Empire. It lies midway between Urmia and Hamadan, very near the present-day town of Takab, and 400 km (250 mi) west of Tehran.
Qamsar is a small town in central Iran. It is the administrative centre of the Qamsar District, which forms part of Kashan County is 15 km south of Kashan in the Province of Isfahan. In the 2006 census the population was 3,566, in 1,048 families.
Lustreware or lusterware is a type of pottery or porcelain with a metallic glaze that gives the effect of iridescence. It is produced by metallic oxides in an overglaze finish, which is given a second firing at a lower temperature in a "muffle kiln", or a reduction kiln, excluding oxygen.
"Blue and white pottery" covers a wide range of white pottery and porcelain decorated under the glaze with a blue pigment, generally cobalt oxide. The decoration is commonly applied by hand, originally by brush painting, but nowadays by stencilling or by transfer-printing, though other methods of application have also been used. The cobalt pigment is one of the very few that can withstand the highest firing temperatures that are required, in particular for porcelain, which partly accounts for its long-lasting popularity. Historically, many other colours required overglaze decoration and then a second firing at a lower temperature to fix that.
Medieval Islamic pottery occupied a geographical position between Chinese ceramics, the unchallenged leaders of Eurasian production, and the pottery of the Byzantine Empire and Europe. For most of the period it can fairly be said to have been between the two in terms of aesthetic achievement and influence as well, borrowing from China and exporting to and influencing Byzantium and Europe. The use of drinking and eating vessels in gold and silver, the ideal in ancient Rome and Persia as well as medieval Christian societies, is prohibited by the Hadiths, with the result that pottery and glass were used for tableware by Muslim elites, as pottery also was in China but was much rarer in Europe and Byzantium. In the same way, Islamic restrictions greatly discouraged figurative wall-painting, encouraging the architectural use of schemes of decorative and often geometrically patterned titles, which are the most distinctive and original specialty of Islamic ceramics.
Swatow ware or Zhangzhou ware is a loose grouping of mainly late Ming dynasty Chinese export porcelain wares initially intended for the Southeast Asian market. The traditional name in the West arose because Swatow, or present-day Shantou, was the South Chinese port in Guangdong province from which the wares were thought to have been shipped. The many kilns were probably located all over the coastal region, but mostly near Zhangzhou, Pinghe County, Fujian, where several were excavated in the mid-1990s, which has clarified matters considerably.
Underglaze is a method of decorating pottery in which painted decoration is applied to the surface before it is covered with a transparent ceramic glaze and fired in a kiln. Because the glaze subsequently covers it, such decoration is completely durable, and it also allows the production of pottery with a surface that has a uniform sheen. Underglaze decoration uses pigments derived from oxides which fuse with the glaze when the piece is fired in a kiln. It is also a cheaper method, as only a single firing is needed, whereas overglaze decoration requires a second firing at a lower temperature.
Chinese ceramics show a continuous development since pre-dynastic times and are one of the most significant forms of Chinese art and ceramics globally. The first pottery was made during the Palaeolithic era. Chinese ceramics range from construction materials such as bricks and tiles, to hand-built pottery vessels fired in bonfires or kilns, to the sophisticated Chinese porcelain wares made for the imperial court and for export. Porcelain was a Chinese invention and is so identified with China that it is still called "china" in everyday English usage.
Tin-glazing is the process of giving tin-glazed pottery items a ceramic glaze that is white, glossy and opaque, which is normally applied to red or buff earthenware. Tin-glaze is plain lead glaze with a small amount of tin oxide added. The opacity and whiteness of tin glaze encourage its frequent decoration. Historically this has mostly been done before the single firing, when the colours blend into the glaze, but since the 17th century also using overglaze enamels, with a light second firing, allowing a wider range of colours. Majolica, maiolica, delftware and faience are among the terms used for common types of tin-glazed pottery.
Ceramic glaze is an impervious layer or coating of a vitreous substance which has been fused to a pottery body through firing. Glaze can serve to color, decorate or waterproof an item. Glazing renders earthenware vessels suitable for holding liquids, sealing the inherent porosity of unglazed biscuit earthenware. It also gives a tougher surface. Glaze is also used on stoneware and porcelain. In addition to their functionality, glazes can form a variety of surface finishes, including degrees of glossy or matte finish and color. Glazes may also enhance the underlying design or texture either unmodified or inscribed, carved or painted.
Iznik pottery, or Iznik ware, named after the town of İznik in western Anatolia where it was made, is a decorated ceramic that was produced from the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century.
Overglaze decoration, overglaze enamelling or on-glaze decoration is a method of decorating pottery, most often porcelain, where the coloured decoration is applied on top of the already fired and glazed surface, and then fixed in a second firing at a relatively low temperature, often in a muffle kiln. It is often described as producing "enamelled" decoration. The colours fuse on to the glaze, so the decoration becomes durable. This decorative firing is usually done at a lower temperature which allows for a more varied and vivid palette of colours, using pigments which will not colour correctly at the high temperature necessary to fire the porcelain body. Historically, a relatively narrow range of colours could be achieved with underglaze decoration, where the coloured pattern is applied before glazing, notably the cobalt blue of blue and white porcelain.
Fritware, also known as stone-paste, is a type of pottery in which frit is added to clay to reduce its fusion temperature. The mixture may include quartz or other siliceous material. An organic compound such as gum or glue may be added for binding. The resulting mixture can be fired at a lower temperature than clay alone. A glaze is then applied on the surface.
Jingdezhen porcelain is Chinese porcelain produced in or near Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province in southern China. Jingdezhen may have produced pottery as early as the sixth century CE, though it is named after the reign name of Emperor Zhenzong, in whose reign it became a major kiln site, around 1004. By the 14th century it had become the largest centre of production of Chinese porcelain, which it has remained, increasing its dominance in subsequent centuries. From the Ming period onwards, official kilns in Jingdezhen were controlled by the emperor, making imperial porcelain in large quantity for the court and the emperor to give as gifts.
Chinese influences on Islamic pottery cover a period starting from at least the 8th century CE to the 19th century. This influence of Chinese ceramics has to be viewed in the broader context of the considerable importance of Chinese culture on Islamic arts in general.
Cizhou ware or Tz'u-chou ware is a term for a wide range of Chinese ceramics from between the late Tang dynasty and the early Ming dynasty, but especially associated with the Northern Song to Yuan period in the 11–14th century. It has been increasingly realized that a very large number of sites in northern China produced these wares, and their decoration is very variable, but most characteristically uses black and white, in a variety of techniques. For this reason Cizhou-type is often preferred as a general term. All are stoneware in Western terms, and "high-fired" or porcelain in Chinese terms. They were less high-status than other types such as celadons and Jun ware, and are regarded as "popular", though many are finely and carefully decorated.
Persian pottery or Iranian pottery is the pottery made by the artists of Persia (Iran) and its history goes back to early Neolithic Age. Agriculture gave rise to the baking of clay, and the making of utensils by the people of Iran. Through the centuries, Persian potters have responded to the demands and changes brought by political turmoil by adopting and refining newly introduced forms and blending them into their own culture. This innovative attitude has survived through time and influenced many other cultures around the world.
The Seljuk stucco figures are stucco (plaster) figures found in the region of the Seljuk Empire, from its "golden age" between the 11th and 13th centuries. They decorated the inner walls and friezes of Seljuk palaces, together with other ornamented stucco ornaments, concealing the wall behind them. The figures were painted bright-colored and often gilded. They represented royal figures and were symbols of power and authority.
Mina'i ware is a type of Persian pottery developed in Kashan, Iran, in the decades leading up to the Mongol invasion of Persia in 1219, after which production ceased. It has been described as "probably the most luxurious of all types of ceramic ware produced in the eastern Islamic lands during the medieval period". The ceramic body of white-ish fritware or stonepaste is fully decorated with detailed paintings using several colours, usually including figures.
Sultanabad ware is a type of Persian pottery developed in Sultanabad, Iran, during the course of Ilkhanid rule in Persia.
