Lakshmi Venu is an Indian businesseswoman and the managing director of Sundaram-Clayton. [1] [2] She is an heiress to the Chennai-based conglomerate TVS Group, which was established by her great-grandfather T. V. Sundaram Iyengar. [3] [4] [5] [6]

Background and education

Lakshmi is the daughter of Venu Srinivasan and Mallika Srinivasan. Both of Lakshmi's parents run separate business empires which they inherited from their respective fathers. Venu Srinivasan runs the TVS Group (Sundaram-Clayton Group) founded by his grandfather T. V. Sundaram Iyengar, while Mallika Srinivasan runs the TAFE Group companies (of the Amalgamations Group) inherited from her father, A. Sivasailam. [7]

Lakshmi has one brother, Sudarshan Venu. She grew up in Chennai and studied at Sishya School in Adyar. She did her degree in economics from Yale University and then her Doctorate in Engineering Management from University of Warwick. [8] [9]

Career

Lakshmi was appointed Joint managing director in Sundaram Clayton at a young age. [10] [11] [5]

Personal life

In 2011, she married Rohan Murty, son of Infosys founder N. R. Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murthy. [12] [13] They divorced in 2015. [14]

In March 2018, it was announced that Lakshmi had married Mahesh Gogineni in a private ceremony held in Jodhpur. Mahesh Gogineni, is the grandson of N. G. Ranga. [15] [16] [17] He is a first-generation entrepreneur who runs a tech start-up.

Sudha Murty is an Indian educator, author, and philanthropist. She is married to the co-founder of Infosys, N. R. Narayana Murty. She was a former chairperson of the non-profit charitable organization Infosys Foundation. In 2024, Murty was nominated as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha on 8 March 2024 for her contribution in social work and education. Murty was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, for social work by the Government of India in 2006. In 2023, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India.

The Deming Prize is the longest-running and one of the highest awards in the world. It recognizes both individuals for their contributions to the field of quality and businesses that have successfully implemented exemplary systems that promote quality of goods and services. It was established in 1951 to honor W. Edwards Deming who contributed greatly to Japan’s proliferation of statistical quality control after World War II. Over the years it has grown, under the guidance of the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) to where it is now also available to non-Japanese companies, albeit usually operating in Japan, and also to individuals recognized as having made major contributions to the advancement of quality. The awards ceremony is broadcast every year in Japan on national television.

Thirukkurungudi Vengaram Sundram Iyengar was an Indian industrialist and automobile pioneer. In 1911, he founded T. V. Sundram Iyengar & Sons, a bus company which later diversified into automobile production and emerged as the parent company of the TVS Group, one of India's biggest business conglomerates. With his humble beginning as a lawyer, he grew into one of the most successful industrialists of his time. The flagship company of the group is TVS Motors established by his son T. S. Srinivasan. He laid foundation for road transport industry in the erstwhile Madras Presidency through the state's first bus service. The TVS group he thus started now extends from motor industry, auto services to financial services.

TVS Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate with its principal headquarters in Madurai and international headquarters in Chennai. It has more than 50 subsidiaries including the two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company and TVS Supply Chain Solutions.

The Murty Classical Library of India began publishing classics of Indian literature in January 2015. The books, which are in dual-language format with the original language and English facing, are published by Harvard University Press. The library was established through a $5.2 million gift from Rohan Murty, the son of Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy and social worker and author Sudha Murty. The series will include translations from Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, other Indian languages and Persian. It will include fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and religious texts from all Indian traditions including Buddhism and Islam. The projected 500 volumes, to be published over a century, have a corpus of thousands of volumes of classic Indian literature to draw on.

Anantharamakrishnan Sivasailam was an Indian industrialist, educationist, philanthropist and a former chairman and managing director of Amalgamations Group of Industries, a ₹ 70 billion conglomerate hosting a workforce of over 12,000. He headed the business family which was listed by Forbes as the 37th richest in India in 2015, with a net worth of US$ 2.5 billion. He was the president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and ASSOCHAM and held the office of the Sheriff of Madras during 1969–1970. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian industry.
