Langat Singh College, commonly known as L. S. College, is a college in Muzaffarpur, in the Indian state of Bihar. It was established on 3 July 1899, [2] and is one of the city's oldest colleges. [3] It is named after its founder Langat Singh. It is affiliated to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, [4] and offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science and arts.

On 10 December 2014, NAAC accredited college by A grade. [5] [6] [7] [8]

The college has a huge and magnificent building incorporating the feature of Indo-Sarcenic architectural style. It was modelled after Balliol College of Oxford.

History

The college was founded in 1899 by contribution of Bhumihar (Babhan) Community. [2] [9] Babu Langat Singh played the most prominent part in its establishment. In 1900, the college was affiliated to Calcutta University. It was declared a Government College in 1915 and subsequently affiliated to Patna University in 1917. In 1952, Bihar university was bifurcated from Patna University [10] and L.S. college got affiliated to it. Subsequently, in 1960, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University was established with headquarters at Muzaffarpur and the college was then affiliated to it. The post-graduate Departments of Bihar University split from this institution in 1979. In 1984 post-graduate studies of various streams were restored.

Notable faculty members include Rajendra Prasad, [11] J.B. Kripalani and Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. [12]

Astronomical observatory

The observatory, the first of its kind in eastern India, was established in the Langat Singh College in 1916 to impart astronomical knowledge to the students in detail. The initiative for the establishment of this observatory was taken by Romesh Chandra Sen of the college. Later, a planetarium, probably the first in India, was also set up in the college in 1946. Both the observatory as well as the planetarium functioned satisfactorily up to the early 1970s, but started declining gradually with the passage of time. The observatory interacted with the Astronomical Observatory of the Presidency University, Kolkata.

In August 2022, several Indian media house reported that the astronomical observatory of Langat Singh College was included on the UNESCO list of endangered heritage observatories of the world. [13] [14] [15] UNESCO, later clarify that the astronomical observatory at the college has not been inscribed on its list of endangered heritage. [16] [17] Although, it is listed as heritage observatory on portal to the heritage of astronomy managed by UNESCO in partnership with World Heritage Centre and International Astronomical Union . [18]

He was born in a small village named Benipur in Muzaffarpur district in a Bhumihar family in the Indian state of Bihar. He had spent nine years in prison for fighting for India's independence. He was the founder of Bihar Socialist Party in 1931 and Congress Socialist Party in 1934. He served as the president of Patna District Congress Committee of Indian National Congress from 1935 to 1937 during the 1937 Indian provincial elections. He was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) from Katra North in 1957. In 1958, he was elected as the Syndicate Member of Bihar University, Muzaffarpur.

Dinesh Kumar Mani is a philanthropist and medical researcher and practitioner in the field of alternative medicine, known for his contributions in the treatment of cancer. He and Sant Prasad founded the first bonded laboratory in Bihar to do research in alternative medicines. He is also the founder and director of the Rural Health Organization, which works to improve health conditions of people living in the countryside and organizes camps for free treatment of patients. He is the author of many books on cancer and healthy lifestyles. He was one of the medical advisers to V. P. Singh during the year 1994, while the former Prime Minister was suffering from blood cancer.

Shyam Nandan Sahay was an Indian landlord, educationist, legislator and the founder vice chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. Born in the Indian state of Bihar, he also served as the vice chancellor of Patna University. He was a member of the 1st Lok Sabha, elected from Muzaffarpur Central constituency on Indian National Congress candidature. He won from Muzaffarpur again in 1957 but died in the same year. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1957, for his contributions to education. A road in Muzaffarpur is named after him.

Dukhan Ram (1899–1990) was an Indian ophthalmologist, academic, legislator and the vice chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. He was the principal of Patna Medical College, one of the oldest medical colleges in India, and the president of Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Sabha, a satellite organization of Arya Samaj, founded by Dayanand Saraswati. He successfully contested the 1962 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Sasaram constituency, on Indian National Congress candidature and served as the president of All India Ophthalmological Society in 1961. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1962, for his contributions to medical science.

Jagat Narain Lal College also known as JNL College, Khagaul is a degree college in Khagaul, Bihar, India. It is a constituent unit of Patliputra University. College offers Senior secondary education and Undergraduate degree in Arts and Science.

Ram Lakhan Singh Yadav College, Bettiah also known as R.L.S.Y College Bettiah is a degree college in Bihar, India. It is an affiliated unit of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University. The college offers Senior secondary education and Undergraduate degree in arts, science and conducts some vocational courses.
