Larry A. Potts is an American former FBI agent who briefly served as Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1995. [1] Potts was demoted due to investigation into two infamous high-profile FBI controversies that he had been involved in:the 1992 standoff with American survivalist [2] Randy Weaver in Idaho,and the 1993 standoff with the Texas Branch Davidian church led by David Koresh. [3]

The Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) is the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) elite tactical unit. In an article to mark its 40th anniversary,it was reported that since its formation in 1983 the HRT had deployed more than 900 times.
The Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco,Firearms and Explosives (BATFE),commonly referred to as the ATF,is a domestic law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice. Its responsibilities include the investigation and prevention of federal offenses involving the unlawful use,manufacture,and possession of firearms and explosives;acts of arson and bombings;and illegal trafficking and tax evasion of alcohol and tobacco products. The ATF also regulates via licensing the sale,possession,and transportation of firearms,ammunition,and explosives in interstate commerce. Many of the ATF's activities are carried out in conjunction with task forces made up of state and local law enforcement officers,such as Project Safe Neighborhoods. The ATF operates a unique fire research laboratory in Beltsville,Maryland,where full-scale mock-ups of criminal arson can be reconstructed. The ATF had 5,285 employees and an annual budget of almost $1.5 billion in 2021. The ATF has received criticism over its handling of the Ruby Ridge siege,the Waco siege and other incidents.
Ruby Ridge was the site of a siege of a cabin occupied by the Weaver family in Boundary County,Idaho,in August 1992. On August 21,deputies of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) came to arrest Randy Weaver under a bench warrant for his failure to appear on federal firearms charges.
William Steele Sessions was an American attorney and jurist who served as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas and Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Sessions served as FBI director from 1987 to 1993,when he was dismissed by President Bill Clinton. After leaving the public sector,Sessions represented Semion Mogilevich,international leader of the Russian mafia. He is the father of Texas Congressman Pete Sessions.
The Waco siege,also known as the Waco massacre,was the siege by U.S. federal government and Texas state law enforcement officials of a compound belonging to the religious cult known as the Branch Davidians between February 28 and April 19,1993. The Branch Davidians,led by David Koresh,were headquartered at Mount Carmel Center ranch in unincorporated McLennan County,Texas,13 miles northeast of Waco. Suspecting the group of stockpiling illegal weapons,the Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco,and Firearms (ATF) obtained a search warrant for the compound and arrest warrants for Koresh and several of the group's members.
Lon Tomohisa Horiuchi is an American former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) sniper and former United States Army officer who was involved in the 1992 Ruby Ridge standoff and 1993 Waco siege. In 1997,Horiuchi was charged with manslaughter for killing Vicki Weaver at Ruby Ridge;the charges were later dropped—not due to insufficient evidence,but due to Constitutional supremacy,granting federal officers immunity from actions taken in the scope of their practice.
Randall Claude Weaver was an American survivalist. He was a central actor in the 1992 Ruby Ridge standoff with federal agents at his cabin near Naples,Idaho,during which his wife and son were killed. Weaver was charged with murder,conspiracy,and assault as well as other crimes. He was acquitted of most of the charges,but was convicted of failing to appear in court on a previous weapons charge and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He and his family eventually received a total of $3.1 million in compensation for the killing of his wife and son by federal agents.
The Montana Freemen were an anti-government Christian Patriot militia based outside the town of Jordan,Montana,United States. The members of the group referred to their land as "Justus Township" and had declared their leaders and followers "sovereign citizens" no longer under the authority of any outside government. They became the center of public attention in 1996 when they engaged in a prolonged armed standoff with agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Standoff is an American drama television series that premiered on the Fox network on September 5,2006. Created by Craig Silverstein,the series focused on an FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit whose members negotiated hostage situations and shared relationships. The Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a senior United States government position in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The office is second in command to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. If the director is absent or the position is vacant,the deputy director automatically takes on the additional title and role of acting director. The office is also the highest position attainable within the FBI without being appointed by the President of the United States. Responsibilities as deputy director include assisting the director and leading prominent investigations. All other FBI executives and special agents in charge report to the director through the deputy director. American militia movement is a term used by law enforcement and security analysts to refer to a number of private organizations that include paramilitary or similar elements. These groups may refer to themselves as militia,unorganized militia,and constitutional militia. Andrew George McCabe is an American attorney who served as the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from February 2016 to March 2018 and as the acting Director of the FBI from May 9,2017,to August 2,2017. He also serves as a professor at George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government. McCabe joined the FBI as a special agent in 1996 and served with the bureau's SWAT team. He became a supervisory special agent in 2003 and held management positions of increasing responsibility until he was appointed deputy director of the FBI in February 2016. McCabe became the acting Director of the FBI following James Comey's dismissal by then President Donald Trump,and served in that position until Trump's appointment of Christopher A. Wray. McCabe later departed from the FBI on poor terms with Trump. After leaving the Trump administration,McCabe has been a contributor at CNN since 2019.

He was the Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division and led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. Previously,he had been the chief of the division's Counterespionage Section and led the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email server.
