Last Night is a 2017 Philippine psychological drama romance film directed by Joyce Bernal, starring Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga. The film follows the story of Mark and Carmina, both hopeless in their lives, intertwined by one fateful night on Jones Bridge when both of them fail to commit suicide. [1] This film is a co-production between ABS-CBN's Star Cinema, Pascual's Spring Films, and Bernal's film production company, N2 Productions.
Mark (Pascual) and Carmina (Gonzaga) find each other in a hopeless time in both their lives. He’s a businessman who lost the will to live while she’s a wide eyed young girl who gave up on life. Mark is about to jump off the Jones Bridge when Carmina calls him for help. Her blouse got stuck on her way down the river to, also, end her life. Mark helps her and they end up helping each other think of other creative ways to die. As they spend time together and in every failed attempt of leaving this world, both Mark and Carmina fall in love for each other but they can’t seem to turn away from their initial goals.
As time went on, Carmina took Mark to her brother's restaurant, and it is here where Mark has slowly regained his will to live. As Mark confessed his love to Carmina, Carmina suddenly walks out on Mark, leaving his question unanswered if she truly loved him.
Carmina then promises Mark that they'll meet back at the church where they took their first nights together. Seeing the regular elderly ladies that frequent the church, Mark then asks them why one is missing from their group, a revelation that shook Mark; one of the elderly ladies had died, and only she can see Carmina on her end days, promising her that her death will be peaceful. Mark then went to the different places that he and Carmina went. It is revealed that on the hotel he only checked in alone, but the staff questioning why did he book separate rooms. On his room, he found his shirt that he used to cover Carmina, neatly folded.
Out of options, he headed towards the restaurant, and it is there where he learned of the terrifying truth. Carmina is simply one of many aliases she created, and only three people has stepped foot in the restaurant with Carmina, and that her real name is Jennifer. Her brother then said that when they were young, Jennifer had a lover named Bobby who is both a journalist and revolutionist. This caused a rift between the two, and eventually Bobby's brazen actions caused his death at Jones Bridge. Having lost her will to live and being unable to find Bobby, Jennifer ended her life by jumping at the ledge of the bridge. Her soul being unable to pass on, she served as the guardian of the bridge, preventing anymore deaths from happening.
Mark then jumped at Jones Bridge that night, and Jennifer once more rescued him and showed him visions. Visions that will become reality if he jumped and killed himself. Mark then becomes determined to better himself after being saved one more time by Jennifer's soul.
Eventually, Mark's problems disappears and becomes resolved, determined to find Jennifer one more time before he leaves for Canada, purchasing a bouquet of white roses for her soul to be at peace. They both then said their farewells, and Mark being pushed by Jennifer to climb to heaven, as her work is still unfinished. As rain starts to fall at Jones Bridge, Jennifer's spirit slowly fades as the sun rises, and Mark's will to live becomes stronger.
