The Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) is a major conference geared towards the marketing of Spanish-language alternative music. [1] [2] It showcases what it considers the best in Latin music and the exciting fresh sounds coming out of rock, hip-hop and electronica scenes. This six-day event provides networking opportunities for leading artists, label executives, journalists, managers, marketers, retailers and programmers. [1]

Contents

In past LAMC events, over 1,250 industry leaders [3] converged at the Stewart Hotel in New York City to participate in industry panels, showcases, exhibitions, press conferences, and networking. Over 30,000 [2] music lovers and industry insiders have attended LAMC concerts, parties and art exhibits, at venues throughout New York City. Among the featured LAMC venues in New York are Central Park SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park, Highline Ballroom, The Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. The conference was co-founded by artist manager Tomas Cookman and music executive Josh Norek in 2000 and continues to this day.

Attendees

LAMC brings together Anglo and Latino heavyweights from all sectors of the entertainment industry - from the participation of key English and Spanish-language magazines such as Billboard , Paste , Harp , Rolling Stone , Latina , Batanga and others, to the executives from leading U.S. and Latino labels, agencies, major corporations, television, print and new media companies. The conference ensures maximum exposure for Latin artists and repertoire in the U.S. marketplace. The attendance of international artists and label executives from Latin America and Europe makes LAMC a global event.

Panels

With the initiative of bringing Latin music to a wider, more mainstream audience, LAMC features several industry panels with known speakers from the entertainment and business world. [1] Among the topics addressed in the past have been Marketing to Urban Latino Culture, Approaches to Retail, Print Media/Television/Radio, Advertising & Sponsorship, International Markets, Music in Film, and others. Each year, new and diverse panel topics are featured with speakers focusing on taking the industry to the next level. Past panelist include, Gabriel Abaroa, Carlos Vives, Pitbull, Thom Russo, Raul Campos, Johnny Marines, and many more industry and artist. [4]

Concerts

LAMC features concerts by leading Latin alternative artists at top New York City venues like Prospect Park, Central Park SummerStage, Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge. Past LAMC performers include Ozomatli, Orishas, Julieta Venegas, The Pinker Tones, Manu Chao, Plastilina Mosh, Los Amigos Invisibles, Calle 13, Natalia Lafourcade, Nortec Collective, Babasónicos, León Larregui, and Mexrrissey. Artist Discovery Program

LAMC features an annual "discovery" contest, in search of bright new talent. Winners receive a chance to perform at an LAMC concert, inclusion on the LAMC compilation CD, a write-up on the LAMC website, and other prizes. Past winners include Kinky, Los Abandoned, Cuarto Poder, Pacha Massive, Carla Morrison and the most recent 2016 winner ILE. [9]

The term "Halifax Pop Explosion" also came to be adopted in the 1990s as the name of the Halifax alternative rock music scene as a whole, which at that time was dominated by power pop acts such as Sloan, Jale, The Super Friendz, and Thrush Hermit.

The PLUG Independent Music Awards, or just PLUG Awards, began in 2001 as a "cartel" of music lovers ranging from DJs and managers to indie retailers and fans.

Nacional Records is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California. It is home to numerous artists including Manu Chao, Grammy-nominated Mexican electronica group Nortec Collective, Colombian rock band Aterciopelados, Argentine rock group Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, American new wave band Tom Tom Club, and French-Chilean hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux.

It has made numerous top-ten lists over the years including that of Billboard Magazine. It has a capacity of 250 people. A scholarly account of Mercury Lounge and its place in the wider history of the city's rock music history and Lower Manhattan was published in 2020.

Music in Omaha, Nebraska, has been a diverse and important influence in the culture of the city. Long a home to jazz, blues, funk and rock, today Omaha has dozens of subgenres represented, including Latin, alternative rock and hip hop. Omaha's historical music contributions include being the home of a thriving African American music scene from the 1920s. More recently, it is home to indie rock's "Omaha Sound" and the birthplace of one of pop music's most successful producers, Terry Lewis.

The Original Rude Girl is the second studio album by Puerto Rican reggaeton recording artist Ivy Queen released on December 15, 1998, by Sony Discos. It is the follow up studio album to Queen's debut effort En Mi Imperio released in 1997. The album includes Queen's debut single "In The Zone" featuring Wyclef Jean, which helped to increase the album and Queen's exposure to American audiences.

Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, better known by his stage name "Visitante Calle 13", "Visitante", or more recently, "Cabra" is a Puerto Rican producer, musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. New York State is a major center for all types of music. Leila Cobo is a Colombian journalist, writer, novelist, pianist and television show host. She is noted for her coverage of Latin music for Billboard where she is currently the Chief Content Officer for Latin Music and Español, overseeing the brand's coverage and development of Latin music across all its platforms. These include billboard.com and billboardespanol.com, which Cobo launched, podcasts and video. A Fulbright Scholar with degrees in music and communications, Cobo also contributes frequently to other publications and speaks frequently at conferences and universities around the world. She also an acclaimed author and novelist who has published five books, including two novels and most recently, a history of Latin music, "Decoding Despacito," which was selected as a New York Times Summer Read pick. Prior to Billboard, she was the pop music critic for the Miami Herald and a reporter for the Los Angeles Times. Also known for her lifestyle writing, Cobo also served as director of content for Nexos, American Airlines' Spanish and Portuguese in-flight magazine. As an author, Cobo has published two novels. Her most recent book, "Decoding Despacito: An Oral History of Latin Music" (Penguin), published in English and Spanish, has been widely acclaimed as an essential guide to the history of Latin music. She also published a musical biography on the late Jenni Rivera, also in English and Spanish ("La Increible Historia de Una Mariposa Guerrera" and a book on the Latin music industry also on Penguin. She also collaborated with Puerto Rican star Ednita Nazario in her memoir "Una Vida," which was published in 2017 by Penguin.

"In the Zone" is a song by Puerto Rican recording artist Ivy Queen featuring Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean. It was composed by Queen, Jean, Deborah Castillero, Aaron King and Omar Navarro and released on February 9, 1999, as the lead single from her second studio album The Original Rude Girl (1998). The song is a hip hop track.

iLe Puerto Rican singer; formerly with Calle 13

Ileana Mercedes Cabra Joglar, better known by the nickname "iLe", is a Puerto Rican singer, composer and vocalist. She began her musical career as a teenager as the sole female singer of Calle 13, a group she took part in for 10 years alongside her brothers René Pérez Joglar (Residente) and Eduardo Cabra Martínez (Visitante).

Lit Lounge was a nightclub in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The two-floor complex housed a concert venue, lounge, dance floor, and Fuse Gallery, an art exhibition space. Lit Lounge was noted as a major venue for New York City's hipster subculture in the mid- to late 2000s, particularly the indie rock and electroclash scene of the era.
