Laura Clayton

Laura Clayton (born December 8, 1943) is an American pianist and composer. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and at Columbia University, New York, with Mario Davidovsky. She began studying composition with Darius Milhaud at the Aspen Music School and graduated with a Master of Music in Composition from the New England Conservatory in Boston. She lived for a while in Brazil and then continued her studies at the University of Michigan, graduating with a Doctorate of Musical Arts. [1] [2]

After completing her education, she worked as a composer. In 1980, her work was chosen to represent the United States at the International Rostrum of Composers. [3]

Her compositional style has been describes as rhythmically complex with a ‘highly refined sense of mystery’, inspired by images of nature. Cree Songs for the Newborn, based on creole poems, was chosen to represent the USA at the 1980 UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. [4]

Iryna Yakovlevna Kyrylina was a Ukrainian composer. She was born in Dresden, Germany, and studied with R.I. Vereschagin at the Kyiv Musical College, and with M.V. Dremlyuga at the Kyiv Conservatory, graduating in 1977. After completing her studies, she taught at a Kyiv Music School and directed children’s choirs. Since 1982 she has worked as a full-time composer.

Jeanne (Albertine) Colin-De Clerck is a Belgian composer who also uses the names Jeanne Colin and Albertine De Clerck. She was born in Brussels, Belgium, and studied at Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. During her time at the Brussels Royal Conservatory of Music she won first prize for solfeggio (1942) and a “mention for piano accompaniment”. After completing her education, she began to compose without formal instruction. Four years later, she took a position teaching at the Music Academy in Anderlecht, and taught as a professor of solfeggio at the Academy of Music Anderlecht from 1946-1977. Her works included pieces for orchestra, chamber, piano and voice. Her style is described as atonal. She married composer Georges Colin (1921-2002), and together they had two sons and two daughters. Throughout her compositional career she also collaborated with her husband on pieces.
