Laura Heredia (born 31 January 2000) is a Spanish modern pentathlete. She was a silver medalist at the 2023 European Games and competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Career

She became the European under-24 champion in 2022. [2] That year, she finished ninth at the World Championships. Her 2023 results included a seventh place at the World Cup in Cairo and fourth place at the Ankara World Cup event. [3] At the 2023 European Games in Krakow, she won a silver medal in the individual event. [4]

She became the first Spanish woman to qualify for the modern pentathlon at the Olympic Games. [5] She competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. [6]

Personal life

From Barcelona, she has worked with biomechanics at Sant Cugat High Performance Centre to help with her sporting performances. [7] Her brother Aleix Heredia is also a modern pentathlete. [8]

In 2021, at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Zillekens, under her maiden name Annika Schleu, received widespread attention after her treatment of the horse she was assigned for the riding portion of the event went viral. Her reaction, and the resulting controversy of the event, partially contributed to modern pentathlon removing equestrian jumping from their competition.

Mhairi Spence is a British modern pentathlete. She has won a series of medals at European and World Championships, but was not selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics by the British team due to the limited number of places available. After considering retiring in 2009, she returned to the sport and in 2012 she won gold medals in both the individual and the team events at the 2012 World Championships, and qualified to be chosen for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
