Laura Maersk is methanol fuel-enabled feeder container ship launched in 2023. Owned by Maersk, It is the world's first container ship to be powered by a methanol-fuel engine.

Background

Laura Maersk was built as a dual fuel (methanol and diesel) container ship in Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, South Korea. [3] [1]

It was named by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Copenhagen on 14 September 2023. [3] It is named after the steam ship SS Laura, the first ship owned by Peter Mærsk Møller, father of the founder of Maersk. [3] It is world's first methanol fuel-enabled container ship and is part of Maersk's objective of having a fleet that operates solely on green fuels. [3]

Description

Laura Maersk is 172 m (564 ft 4 in) long, 32 m (105 ft 0 in) wide and has a gross tonnage of 25,750  GT. [4] Both its main engine, developed by MAN Energy Solutions in partnership with Hyundai Heavy Industries, and its auxiliary Hyundai Heavy Industries Hi-touch Marine & Stationary Engine are capable of running on methanol and diesel. [2] [1] Maersk aims to use green methanol to fuel Laura Maersk, initially from Rotterdam, Netherlands until production is enabled in Denmark. [1] [6] The ship has a capacity of 2,100 TEU. [5]

Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller is the first ship of Maersk Line's Triple E class of container vessels. At the time of its entry into service in 2013, it had the largest cargo capacity in twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) of any vessel, and was the longest container ship in service worldwide. Constructed for Maersk by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea, it was launched in February 2013 and began operational service during July 2013. It was named for Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the CEO of Maersk from 1965 to 1993. The ship is the first of a class of 20 identical vessels.

<i>Maersk Honam</i> Container ship

Maersk Honam was a container ship operated by Maersk Line. The vessel caught fire on 6 March 2018 while sailing in the Arabian Sea. Five members of the crew of 27 were killed, including one rescued crew member who died later from injuries.

MV <i>Dali</i> Singapore-registered container ship

MV Dali is a Neopanamax container ship built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, best known for causing the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore by alliding with it on March 26, 2024. Contracted in 2013, her hull was laid down in October 2014, launched in December, and she was named after Spanish painter Salvador Dalí in January 2015. In March, she was delivered to Stellar Marine, a subsidiary of the Greek shipowner Oceanbulk Maritime. She has been owned by Grace Ocean Ltd., a Singaporean company, since 2016, and she is flagged in Singapore. In July 2016, she allided with the berth at the container terminal of the Port of Antwerp, causing significant damage to the ship and the berth.

The new A class III will be a series of 18 container ships built for Maersk Line by Hyundai Heavy Industries. They are the largest container ships run on methanol. The ships are the first dual fuel container ship class beginning with Laura Maersk.
