Laura Veendapi McLeod-Katjirua is a Namibian politician who has been Governor of the Khomas Region since 2012 and Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO since 2012. Previously she was Governor of Omaheke Region from 2001 to 2012. She was transferred to Khomas Region by President Hifikepunye Pohamba after she was elected as Deputy Secretary General of SWAPO on December 2,2012.
Laura McLeod grew up in Gobabis,the regional capital of Omaheke. She went into Zambian exile in 1975 while she still was a teenager and completed her secondary education there at Nyango Education Centre in 1978. She graduated with a diploma in Public Administration from the United Nations Institute for Namibia,and with a Teacher's Diploma from the National Institute for Public Administration in 1982,both located in Lusaka. McLeod then stayed in Botswana,Angola,and East Germany and returned to Namibia in 1989. Upon Namibian independence in 1990,she worked as an agricultural technician. [2] [3]
McLeod was elected Regional Councillor for Omaheke Region in 2001,and Governor in 2002. She was the first female Governor of Omaheke. In the same year she was elected to the SWAPO Central Committee. [3] In December 2012 she was elected as SWAPO Deputy Secretary-General,a position considered number four in the SWAPO hierarchy. [4]
McLeod-Katjirua has one son and one daughter. [2]
The South West Africa People's Organisation,officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia,is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960,it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group.
Khomas is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its name refers to the Khomas Highland,a high plateau landscape that dominates this administrative subdivision. Khomas is centered on the capital city Windhoek and provides for this reason superior transportation infrastructure. It is located in the central highlands of the country and is bordered by the Erongo region to the west and the northwest and by the Otjozondjupa region to the north. To the east is the Omaheke region,while in the south is the Hardap region. The region is characterized by its hilly countrysize and many valleys. It has well-developed economical,financial,and trade sectors. Khomas Region occupies 4.5% of the land area of Namibia but has the highest population of any of its regions (16.2%). Khomas is one of only three Namibian regions to have neither shoreline nor a foreign border.
Otjozondjupa is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital is Otjiwarongo. The region further contains the municipalities of Okahandja and Grootfontein and the towns Okakarara and Otavi. As of 2020,Otjozondjupa had 97,945 registered voters.
Omaheke is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia,the least populous region. Its capital is Gobabis. It lies in eastern Namibia on the border with Botswana and is the western extension of the Kalahari Desert. The self-governed villages of Otjinene,Leonardville and Witvlei are situated in the region. As of 2020,Omaheke had 48,594 registered voters.
Gobabis is a town in eastern Namibia. It is the regional capital of the Omaheke Region,and the district capital of the Gobabis electoral constituency. Gobabis is situated 200 km (120 mi) down the B6 motorway from Windhoek to Botswana. The town is 113 km (70 mi) from the Buitepos border post with Botswana,and serves as an important link to South Africa on the tarred Trans-Kalahari Highway. Gobabis is in the heart of the cattle farming area. In fact Gobabis is so proud of its cattle farming that a statue of a large Brahman bull with the inscription "Cattle Country" greets visitors to the town. Gobabis also has its own local airport.
Khomasdal Constituency is a constituency in Windhoek in the Khomas Region of Namibia. As of December 2019 it had 25,550 registered voters. The constituency consists of parts of the suburbs Khomasdal,Katutura,and Otjomuise. It had a population of 43,921 in 2011,up from 27,950 in 2001.
Marten Nenkete Kapewasha is a Namibian diplomat and politician. A member of the SWAPO Central Committee since 1991,Kapewasha was appointed Namibia's High Commissioner to India in September 2005 following a six-year stint in the same position in Russia.
Doreen Nampiye Sioka is a Namibian politician. She is member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1994 for the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),and a member of the cabinet since 2005,serving as Minister of Gender Equality,Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
Lempy Lucas,also:Lukas,is a Namibian politician. A member of the National Assembly from 2000 until 2015,Lucas is a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). She has held a number of deputy minister positions in Namibia's government between 2004 and 2015. She also was a SWAPO Party Youth League activist.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is a Namibian politician who is Namibia's third and current vice president since February 2024. She previously served as the deputy prime minister of Namibia from 2015 to 2024. Currently the SWAPO vice president,and has retained her position and is set to become the party's first female presidential candidate in November 2024. She has also served as Namibia's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation since December 2012. From March 2010 to December 2012,she was Minister of Environment and Tourism. Nandi-Ndaitwah is a member of SWAPO,Namibia's ruling party,and a long-time member of the National Assembly. In 2017,Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected vice-president of the Swapo Party at the party's 6th Congress. She is the first woman to serve in that position.
Stefanus "Steve" Orateng Mogotsi is a Namibian politician and former featherweight boxer. A member of SWAPO he contested Kalahari Constituency in his native Omaheke Region in regional elections since 1998. In the 2004 regional elections he won and became councillor,and he also was elected to represent Omaheke in the National Council of Namibia.
Gobabis Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Omaheke Region of Namibia. As of December 2019 it had 13,457 registered voters. The constituency covers the rural area southeast of Gobabis and the town itself,except its eastern Nossobville suburb which belongs to Kalahari Constituency. Gobabis is also the seat of the constituency office.
Festus Ueitele is a Namibian politician who has been Governor of Omaheke Region from April 2013 to April 2020. He was placed 49th on the SWAPO electoral list prior to the 2009 general election and,as SWAPO won 54 seats,he was elected to the National Assembly of Namibia. Prior to and following the 2004 general election,Ueitele was SWAPO's regional coordinator for Omaheke Region.
The Augustineum Secondary School,established in 1866,is among the oldest schools in Namibia. Originally situated in Otjimbingwe,it was relocated to Okahandja in 1890,and finally to Windhoek in 1968. Previously also known as the Augustineum Training College and today the Augustineum Secondary School,it is a public school located in Khomasdal,a suburb of Windhoek.
Margaret Natalie Mensah-Williams is a Namibian politician,diplomat,and prominent SWAPO member. She currently serves as Namibia's ambassador to the United States.
Rapama Kamehozu was a Namibian politician,teacher,and a member of the SWAPO political party. Kamehozu served as the governor of Otjozondjupa Region from 2011 to 2012 and as governor of Omaheke Region from December 2012 until his death on 23 March 2013.
Affirmative Repositioning (AR) is a leftist political movement in Namibia mainly focused on land reform,youth empowerment and social reform. Founded in 2014 by Job Amupanda,Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and George Kambala,the AR uses social media platforms to mobilise residents to apply for erven from municipalities. Due to thousands of youth submitting their forms on the same day,these activities have the character of mass demonstrations. The movement had,in a first round in November 2014,achieved a wave of individual land applications in Windhoek,Namibia's capital,which had since spread to other Namibian towns. The Affirmative Repositioning movement had threatened to take the land by force had the applications not have been processed and approved by July 2015 in the local municipalities.
Sirkka Namutenya Anneli Mwahafa Ausiku is a Namibian administrator and politician. She is the governor of Kavango West Region since 2014.
