Leandro Katz (born 1938) is an Argentine-born writer, visual artist and filmmaker known primarily for his films and photographic installations. His works include long-term, multi-media projects that delve into Latin American history through a combination of scholarly research, anthropology, photography, moving images and printed texts.
He lived and worked in New York from 1965 to 2006, and currently lives in Buenos Aires. He has been a member of the faculty at the School of Visual Arts, Art History Program, Brown University, Semiotics Program, and a professor of film production and theory at the College of Arts and Communication at William Paterson University.
Katz's notable long-term works include The Catherwood Project, a photographic reconstruction of the two 1850s expeditions of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood to the Maya areas of Central America and Mexico, Project For The Day You'll Love Me, which investigates the events around the capture and execution of Che Guevara in Bolivia in 1967, Paradox which deals with Central American archaeology and the banana plantations of the United Fruit Company in Honduras and Guatemala, Vortex, which addresses the social and literary history of the rubber industry in the Amazon region of the Putumayo River based on a report by Roger Casement, and Tania, Masks and Trophies, a project that examines the figure of Tamara Bunke, the only woman who fought together with Che Guevara in his last campaign of 1967. Leandro Katz has produced many books and artists’ books and eighteen narrative and non-narrative films. His most recent books, Natural History, and The Ghosts of Ñancahuazú, were published in 2010. His artist's book dealing with matters of time and daily life, S(h)elf Portrait, was published in Buenos Aires in 2008. [3] In 2019, he published Bedlam Days: The Early Plays of Charles Ludlam and The Ridiculous Theatrical Company with over 200 never-before-seen photographs of Ludlam's avant garde plays of the 60s and 70s, and with extended quotations from "Queer Theatre" by Stefan Brecht. Leandro Katz's work has earned the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and he has received support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, and the Hubert Bals Fund, Rotterdam International Film Festival. His film, The Day You'll Love Me won the Coral Prize at the Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, among others. [5] [6] In 2021 he was awarded the Premio Nacional a la Trayectoria by the National Minister of Culture, Argentina, 109 Salón Nacional. [7]
Leandro Katz has exhibited as an artist, and screened his films, at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, El Museo del Barrio, the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA PS1, the Chicago Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art, the Bienal de La Habana, Cuba, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, among others. Emilio Pettoruti (1892–1971) was an Argentine painter, who caused a scandal with his avant-garde cubist exhibition in 1924 in Buenos Aires. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Buenos Aires was a city full of artistic development. Pettoruti's career was thriving during the 1920s when "Argentina witnessed a decade of dynamic artistic activity; it was an era of euphoria, a time when the definition of modernity was developed." While Pettoruti was influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Abstraction, he did not claim to paint in any of those styles in particular. Exhibiting all over Europe and Argentina, Emilio Pettoruti is remembered as one of the most influential artists in Argentina in the 20th century for his unique style and vision.
Jesse Lerner is a filmmaker and writer based in Los Angeles. His documentaries include Frontierland, about the blurred Latino experience in the United States; Ruins, The Atomic Sublime, The Absent Stone and The American Egypt. He directed the short films Magnavoz, T.S.H., and Natives. His films were on display at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art, the Rotterdam International Film Festival (2011), the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Aztlán Today exhibit at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. These films were featured at mid-career surveys at the National Gallery of Art, the Cineteca Nacional, Anthology Film Archives, and the Churubusco Studios. His books include F is for Phony, a survey of faked documentaries, The Shock of Modernity, The Maya of Modernism, Ism Ism Ism: Experimental Cinema in Latin America, The Catherwood Project, How to Read el Pato Pascual, L.A. Collects L.A., Lean-Drok-Atz, and The Mexperimental Cinema. Two of these publications were associated with film series: Ism Ism Ism and The Mexperimental Cinema. He has also curated other film, photography, and fine arts exhibitions at the National Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, the Schindler House/MAK Center, the Guggenheim Museums, and the Robert Flaherty Seminar. He has lectured extensively on film and other visual arts at institutions including CalArts, Princeton University, the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, the Freie Universitat Berlin, the Museo Amparo, University College London, the Getty Museum, the Hammer Museum, Cornell University, the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Berlin Documentary Forum, and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
Alfredo Prior is a painter, writer, performer and musician. His career began at the age of 18 with his first solo exhibition in Buenos Aires, where he still lives and works.

Rogelio Polesello was an Argentine painter, muralist and sculptor. He was best known for making Op art known in Latin America. He won two Konex Awards; one in 1982 and another in 2012. He was born in Buenos Aires.
Delia Cancela is an Argentine pop artist and fashion designer. She has lived in Argentina, New York, London and Paris, and exhibited internationally. Retrospective exhibitions of her work and her collaborations with Pablo Mesejean include Delia Cancela 2000-Retrospectiva (2000), Pablo & Delia, The London Years 1970-1975 (2001), and Delia Cancela: una artista en la moda (2013).
Nora Aslan is an Argentine visual artist and photographer, known for tapestry design and collage. Her work has been compared to that of Max Ernst, Fred Tomaselli, Hieronymus Bosch, and Matthias Grünewald.
Juan Nicolás Melé was an Argentine sculptor, painter, and art critic. Melé was a member of the Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención as well as co-founder of the Grupo Arte Nuevo.
Carlos María "Rhod" Rothfuss was a Uruguayan-Argentine artist who specialized in painting and sculpture. He was considered a key theoretician for the development of the concrete art movement in Argentina in the 1940s and was a founding member of the international Latin American abstract art movement, Grupo Madí.
Elbio Raúl Lozza was an Argentinian painter, draughtsman, designer, journalist, and theorist who was part of the concrete art movement. He was part of the Asociación Arte Concreto-Invención. He was the founder of the Perceptivist group. He was granted the Platinum Konex Award in Visual Arts from Argentina in 1992.
Inés Katzenstein is an Argentine curator, art historian, and art critic who specializes in Latin American art.
Dalila Puzzovio is a Latin American visual artist and fashion designer active during the 1960s. Puzzovio works in the art forms of pop, happening, and conceptual art. Her artistic creativity is credited by Graciela Melgarejo as having paved the way for subsequent Argentine artists and greatly influenced the work they produced.
Mari Nalte Orensanz is an Argentine artist. Her artwork examines the integration of thought and matter as a methodology to obtain a social consciousness. Orensanz's experience of Argentina's "Dirty War" has influenced her artwork and translated itself into the work Pensar es un Hecho Revolucionario. Located in the Parque de la Memoria in Bueno Aires, it is attributed as a monument for the victims of state terrorism.
Diana Dowek is a visual artist, known for one of her first series, denoting her engagement in human rights movements. Dowek also was a founder of the Association of Visual Artists of the Republic of Argentina (AVARA) and is now a Vice President.
Raquel Rabinovich is an Argentinian-American artist. She is known for her monochromatic paintings and drawings as well as for her large-scale glass sculpture environments and site-specific installations along the shores of the Hudson River. She is included in the Oral History Program of the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art. Her work is included in numerous museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Fabiana Barreda is an Argentine photographer, performer, installationist and multimedia artist. Her work specializes in the body, desire and politics of gender. She has participated in national and international exhibitions, being the most important ones in places such as Museum of Modern Art, New York University (USA), International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (Netherlands), Telefonica Foundation of Madrid (Spain) and Museum of Monterrey – MACO (Mexico).
Silvia Rivas is an Argentine visual artist known for her multi-channel video installations. In Latin America she is considered a precursor in the area of expanded video. Her work is characterized by the crossing of materialities and technologies in which she uses both electronic devices and ancestral techniques. Her production is organized in thematic series of video installations, drawings, photographs or objects. Interested in revealing the metaphorical power of different materialities, she uses the electronic medium and the moving image to record stillness, the imminent and the subjective perception of time.
