Mediterranean Games appearances (overview)

34 male athletes (48 in 1951) represented Lebanon at the second Mediterranean games, held in Barcelona-Spain from July 16 to 25, 1955. In these games, Lebanon got his first gold medal thanks to Moustafa Laham, although the total medal count decreased from 19 to 6.

Contents

Lifting 380 kg, Moustafa Laham improved on his 362.5 kg silver performance of 1951. Salim Moussa's 262.5 kg lift, although better than his 247.5 kg in 1951, only got him a second bronze. In wrestling, Zakaria Chehab got a silver medal after a bronze in 1951, while Elie Naasan got a second bronze.

No boxing or shooting medals were won by Lebanon this time (5 in 1951), and no free wrestling competitions were held at these games (4 medals for Lebanon in 1951).

The 1951 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the I Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Alexandria 1951, were the 1st Mediterranean Games. The Games were held for 15 days from 5 to 20 October 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, where 734 athletes from 10 countries participated. There were a total of 13 different sports.

Wrestling competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, were held at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium from 12–21 August 2008. It was split into two disciplines, Freestyle and Greco-Roman which are further divided into different weight categories. Men competed in both disciplines whereas women only took part in the freestyle events with 18 gold medals being awarded. This was the second Olympics with women's wrestling as an event.

Hamit Kaplan was a Turkish World and Olympic champion sports wrestler of Circassian descent in the Heavyweight class. He won the gold, silver and bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at three consecutive Olympic Games in 1956, 1960 and 1964.

The 1974 Asian Games was a multi-sport event held in Tehran, Iran from September 1, 1974, to September 16, 1974. This was the first time that Asian Games were celebrated in any Middle East country. A total of 3,010 athletes selected from 25 Asian National Olympic Committees participated in 16 sports divided into 202 events. The number of participating countries was the greatest in Asian Games history, eighteen nations competed in Bangkok, host of the 1970 Asian Games. Fencing, gymnastics (artistic) and women's basketball were included for the first time; while sailing—which made its debut in the previous Asian Games—was not included, however since 1978, sailing is a part of the Asian Games sports.

Aisuluu Tynybekova is a Kyrgyz freestyle wrestler. She won the silver medal in the women's 62 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She also competed in the women's 63 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the first woman to wrestle for Kyrgyzstan in the Olympics. A legal dispute threatened to prevent Tynybekova from competing in London, but the case was delayed until after the Games. Tynybekova was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Henna Johansson.

The men's Greco-Roman light heavyweight was one of thirteen wrestling events held as part of the wrestling at the 1928 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held from August 2 to 5, and featured 17 wrestlers from 17 nations.

Lebanon hosted the 3rd Mediterranean Games in Camille Chamoun sports city in Beirut. The event took place from 11 to 23 October 1959. 11 nations were represented by a total of 792 athletes, all males, competing in 17 sports of 106 events. France came first: its 66 athletes won 69 medals, while the host country, Lebanon, with the most athletes (180), came 8th with 30 medals. The United Arab Republic, participating for the first and only time as Egypt and Syria, came second.
