Mediterranean Games appearances (overview)

Lebanon hosted the 3rd Mediterranean Games in Camille Chamoun sports city in Beirut. The event took place from 11 to 23 October 1959. 11 nations were represented by a total of 792 athletes, all males, competing in 17 sports of 106 events. France came first: its 66 athletes won 69 medals (26 gold), while the host country, Lebanon, with the most athletes (180), came 8th with 30 medals (only 3 golds). The United Arab Republic, participating for the first and only time as Egypt and Syria, came second (the UAR in the 1963 games included only Egypt).

Lebanon won most of its medals in wrestling, weightlifting, and equestrian sports. after 2 bronzes in the 2 previous games, Elie Naasan struck gold this time in wrestling for Lebanon.[ citation needed ]

The football tournament at the 1960 Summer Olympics was held from 26 August to 10 September in 1960 throughout Italy. The tournament featured 16 men's national teams from four continental confederations. The 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four and each group played a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the first-ranked teams of each group advanced to the semi-finals, and culminating with the gold medal match in Rome on 10 September 1960.

Sara Samir Elsayed Mohamed Ahmed is an Egyptian weightlifter who won a bronze medal in the women's 69 kg event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Originally from the Ismailia Governorate, Ahmed was encouraged to take part in weightlifting by her family and was competing internationally by 2012. At the senior level, she has earned gold medals at the Mediterranean and African Games, as well as the Arab Championships. In Rio, she became the first Arab woman to receive an Olympic weightlifting medal and the first Egyptian woman to receive an Olympic medal on the podium in any discipline.
