The XIV Mediterranean Games – Tunis 2001, commonly known as the 2001 Mediterranean Games, were the 14th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in Tunis, Tunisia, from 2 to 15 September 2001, where 2,991 athletes from 23 countries participated. There were a total of 230 medal events from 23 different sports.

Hamit Kaplan was a Turkish World and Olympic champion sports wrestler of Turkish descent in the Heavyweight class. He won the gold, silver and bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at three consecutive Olympic Games in 1956, 1960 and 1964.

2002 Asian Games medal table

The 2002 Asian Games was a multi-sport event held in Busan, South Korea from September 29 to October 14, 2002. Busan was the second South Korean city to host the Games, after Seoul in 1986. Athletics at the 1991 Mediterranean Games

At the 1991 Mediterranean Games, the athletics events were held at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. A total of 38 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 15 by female athletes. An exhibition heptathlon also took place, with Algeria's Yasmina Azzizi being the only athlete to compete. Several hundred athletes from fourteen Mediterranean nations took part in the competition.
