Lee Swindlehurst (born 1960 in Boulder City) is an electrical engineer who has made contributions in sensor array signal processing for radar and wireless communications, detection and estimation theory, and system identification, and has received many awards in these areas. He is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California at Irvine. [1]
He received the B.S., summa cum laude, and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in 1985 and 1986, respectively, and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1991. From 1986-1990, he was employed at ESL, Inc., of Sunnyvale, CA, where he was involved in the design of algorithms and architectures for several radar and sonar signal processing systems. He was on the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University from 1990–2007, where he was a Full Professor and served as Department Chair from 2003-2006. During 1996-1997, he held a joint appointment as a visiting scholar at both Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, and at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. From 2006-07, he was the Vice President of Research for ArrayComm LLC in San Jose, California. After leaving ArrayComm in 2008, he began working at UC Irvine where he is currently the Assistant Dean.
Dr. Swindlehurst is a Fellow of the IEEE (2004) for contributions to the field of space-time signal processing for radar and wireless communications, [2] and a past Secretary of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, and has served as a member of the Editorial Boards for the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking and the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, and is a past Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. He was elected to the Tau Beta Pi society in 1985. He is a recipient of several paper awards: the 2000 IEEE W. R. G. Baker Prize Paper Award, [3] the 2006, [4] 2010, [5] and 2021 IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Best Paper Award, the 2006 IEEE Communications Society Stephen O. Rice Prize in the Field of Communication Theory, [6] and is co-author of a paper that received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award in 2001. [7]
Beamforming or spatial filtering is a signal processing technique used in sensor arrays for directional signal transmission or reception. This is achieved by combining elements in an antenna array in such a way that signals at particular angles experience constructive interference while others experience destructive interference. Beamforming can be used at both the transmitting and receiving ends in order to achieve spatial selectivity. The improvement compared with omnidirectional reception/transmission is known as the directivity of the array.
In signal processing, direction of arrival (DOA) denotes the direction from which usually a propagating wave arrives at a point, where usually a set of sensors are located. These set of sensors forms what is called a sensor array. Often there is the associated technique of beamforming which is estimating the signal from a given direction. Ian F. Akyildiz is a Turkish-American electrical engineer. He received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, in 1978, 1981 and 1984, respectively. Currently, he is the President and CTO of the Truva Inc. since March 1989. He retired from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Georgia Tech in 2021 after almost 35 years service as Ken Byers Chair Professor in Telecommunications and Chair of the Telecom group.
Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) is a set of multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technologies for multipath wireless communication, in which multiple users or terminals, each radioing over one or more antennas, communicate with one another. In contrast, single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) involves a single multi-antenna-equipped user or terminal communicating with precisely one other similarly equipped node. Analogous to how OFDMA adds multiple-access capability to OFDM in the cellular-communications realm, MU-MIMO adds multiple-user capability to MIMO in the wireless realm.
In radio, multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) is a method for multiplying the capacity of a radio link using multiple transmission and receiving antennas to exploit multipath propagation. MIMO has become an essential element of wireless communication standards including IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, HSPA+ (3G), WiMAX, and Long Term Evolution (LTE). More recently, MIMO has been applied to power-line communication for three-wire installations as part of the ITU G.hn standard and of the HomePlug AV2 specification.
Ali H. Sayed is the dean of engineering at EPFL, where he teaches and conducts research on Adaptation, Learning, Statistical Signal Processing, and Signal Processing for Communications. He is the Director of the EPFL Adaptive Systems Laboratory. He has authored several books on estimation and filtering theories, including the textbook Adaptive Filters, published by Wiley & Sons in 2008. Professor Sayed received the degrees of Engineer and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1987 and 1989, respectively, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1992.
Peter (Petre) Stoica is a researcher and educator in the field of signal processing and its applications to radar/sonar, communications and bio-medicine. He is a professor of Signals and Systems Modeling at Uppsala University in Sweden, and a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, the United States National Academy of Engineering (International Member), the Romanian Academy, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society of Sciences. He is also a Fellow of IEEE, EURASIP, IETI, and the Royal Statistical Society.
Georgios B. Giannakis is a Greek-American Computer Scientist, engineer and inventor. He has been an Endowed Chair Professor of Wireless Telecommunications, he was Director of the Digital Technology Center, and at present he is a McKnight Presidential Chair with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
The first smart antennas were developed for military communications and intelligence gathering. The growth of cellular telephone in the 1980s attracted interest in commercial applications. The upgrade to digital radio technology in the mobile phone, indoor wireless network, and satellite broadcasting industries created new opportunities for smart antennas in the 1990s, culminating in the development of the MIMO technology used in 4G wireless networks.
Xiaodong Wang is a Chinese-born American electrical engineer and information theorist. He currently serves as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. He earned a BS degree in electrical engineering and applied mathematics from Shanghai Jiaotong University, an MS degree in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University, and a PhD from Princeton University in electrical engineering. He formerly served as assistant professor of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University before he joined Columbia as an assistant professor in January 2002.

Heath Jr. is an American electrical engineer, researcher, educator, wireless technology expert, and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. He is also the president and CEO of MIMO Wireless Inc. He was the founding director of the Situation Aware Vehicular Engineering Systems initiative.
Anthony C.K. Soong is an American scientist who leads a research group at Futurewei Technologies. His research interests are in statistical signal processing, robust statistics, wireless communications, spread spectrum techniques, multicarrier signaling, multiple antenna techniques, software defined networking and physiological signal processing.
Sergio Barbarossa is an Italian professor, engineer and inventor. He is a professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.
Moeness G. Amin is an Egyptian-American professor and engineer. Amin is the director of the Center for Advanced Communications and a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Villanova University.
Fauzia Ahmad is an associate professor of electrical engineering at Temple University. Her research considers statistical signal processing and ultrasonic guided wave structural health monitoring. She serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems and Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and SPIE.
K. J. Ray Liu is an American scientist, engineer, educator, and entrepreneur. He is the founder, former Chief Executive Officer, and now Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Origin Wireless, Inc., which pioneers artificial intelligence analytics for wireless sensing and indoor tracking.
Daniel W. Bliss is an American professor, engineer, and physicist. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and was awarded the IEEE Warren D. White award for outstanding technical advances in the art of radar engineering in 2021 for his contributions to MIMO radar, Multiple-Function Sensing and Communications Systems, and Novel Small-Scale Radar Applications. He is a professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. He is also the director of the Center for Wireless Information Systems and Computational Architecture (WISCA).
Tapan Kumar Sarkar was an Indian-American electrical engineer and Professor Emeritus at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University. He was best known for his contributions to computational electromagnetics and antenna theory.
Subbarayan Pasupathy was a Canadian electrical engineer and a professor emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Toronto. He also served as the Chairman of the Communications Group and as the Associate Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Toronto.
Joseph Tabrikian is an Israeli professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is the founder and former head of the School. He is a fellow of IEEE “For contributions to estimation theory and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output radars.”
