Leopoldo Bertrand (born 1943) is a Spanish military engineer and politician. He served at the Parliament for the People's Party representing Asturias between 2004 and 2008.
Bertrand was born in Gijón in 1943. [1] His mother was Concepción de la Riera who died at the age of 99 in May 2019. [2] He has three siblings. [2]
Bertrand graduated from the Colegio de la Inmaculada in his hometown in 1962. [3] He attended the Naval Military Academy in Marín,Pontevedra and graduated as a second lieutenant. [1]
Bertrand worked in the shipyards of the Marítima del Musel company before he attended the Naval Military Academy. [1] Following his graduation from the academy he worked in the Spanish Navy based in Gijón. [1] He retired from the Navy and worked at the Maritime Safety and Rescue Society in Madrid. [1]
Bertrand became the councilor of the Gijón City Council and then was elected as a deputy for the People's Party in 2004. [4] While he was serving at the Parliament he was appointed dean of the Official College of Naval and Oceanic Engineersin 2007 [4] [5] which he held for eight years. [1] Then he served as a board member of the college. [2]
Bertrand is married to María Antonia del Río and has four children. [1]
Admiral-General Luis Carrero Blanco was a Spanish Navy officer and politician. A long-time confidant and right-hand man of dictator Francisco Franco,Carrero served as Spain's Premier. Upon graduating from the naval academy Carrero Blanco participated in the Rif War,and later the Spanish Civil War,in which he supported the Rebel faction. He became one of the most prominent figures in the Francoist dictatorship's power structure and held throughout his career a number of high-ranking offices such as those of Undersecretary of the Presidency from 1941 to 1967 and Franco's deputy from 1967 to 1973. He also was the main drafter behind the 1947 Law of Succession to the Headship of the State. Franco handpicked him as his successor in the role of head of government,with Carrero thereby taking office in June 1973.
A coup d'état was attempted in Spain in February 1981 by elements of the Civil Guard and the Spanish military. The failure of the coup marked the last serious attempt to revert Spain to Francoist government and served to consolidate Spain's democratization process. King Juan Carlos I played a major role in foiling the coup,and the monarchy emerged with renewed legitimacy as a result.
