Leopoldo Cintra Frías (born 17 July 1941) is a retired Cuban military officer and political leader. Cintra was the former Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

Military career

He participated in the Cuban Revolution in November 1957 at the age of 16. His first actions were to sell bonds, distribute bread in a van, and transport people to the mountains. He later[ when? ] joined the Column 1 José Martí, which was commanded by Fidel Castro, where he remained until the end of the revolution. He accompanied Fidel Castro on his journey from the Oriente Province to Havana, in the commonly known Freedom Caravan. Cintra was sent to Prague (Czechoslovakia) to study Artillery in 1960. Upon his return to Cuba, he was appointed head of the artillery and infantry units in the FAR.

He finished his studies at the Superior Basic School in 1962 and passed the Superior Academic Course in 1967. Cintra led a large unit of Cuban tanks in Angola and Ethiopia in the late 1970s and in the early 1980s. He graduated in 1982 from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR. In 1990, he was appointed the Chief of the Western Army, one of the three regional districts of the FAR. Upon his return to Cuba, he continued lead of the Western Army.

In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Corps General. In October 2008, Cintra held the position of First Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. President Raúl Castro promoted him to the post of Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces on November 9, 2011, following the death of General Julio Casas Regueiro. [1] [2] On April 15, 2021, Cintra departed as Minister of the FAR and was replaced with his Chief of Staff Álvaro López Miera. [3]

Granma is a yacht that was used to transport 82 fighters of the Cuban Revolution from Mexico to Cuba in November 1956 to overthrow the regime of Fulgencio Batista. The 60-foot diesel-powered vessel was built in 1943 by Wheeler Shipbuilding of Brooklyn, New York, as a light armored target practice boat, US Navy C-1994, and modified postwar to accommodate 12 people. "Granma", in English, is an affectionate term for a grandmother; the yacht is said to have been named for the previous owner's grandmother.

Arnaldo Tomás Ochoa Sánchez was a Cuban general who was executed by the government of Fidel Castro after being found guilty of a variety of crimes including drug smuggling and treason. Allegations from a former Castro bodyguard claimed that Ochoa was executed, and Interior Minister Jose Abrantes sentenced to a 20-year prison term, allegedly to cover up high level Castro brothers involvement in the drug smuggling trade.

Corps General Abelardo Colomé Ibarra was a Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba and the Cuban Minister of the Interior, serving in the latter position from 1989, until his retirement in October, 2015. Known as Furry he first laid the foundations of State Security in 1959.

Frank País García was a Cuban revolutionary who campaigned for the overthrow of General Fulgencio Batista's government in Cuba. País was the urban coordinator of the 26th of July Movement, and was a key organizer within the urban underground movement, collaborating with Fidel Castro's guerrilla forces which were conducting activities in the Sierra Maestra mountains. País was killed in the streets of Santiago de Cuba by the Santiago police on July 30, 1957.

An indirect presidential election was held in Cuba on 24 February 2008, in which the National Assembly of People's Power elected a new President of the Council of State and the members of the Council of State. The election followed the January 2008 parliamentary election. The Camilo Cienfuegos Military Schools System are a type of boarding school in the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. Founded 1966, it has 20 campuses in many cities, and is an official military high school. They provide pre-military training to students aged 11 to 17. They forge of more than 70% of officers and 50% of the generals and colonels in the FAR. It is named after Camilo Cienfuegos, a Cuban revolutionary who, along with Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida Bosque, and Raúl Castro, took part in the 1956 Granma expedition. Unlike the Russian Suvorov Military Schools, they are co-educational, modeled on United States military high schools and preparatory pre-college institutes.
