Leslie Charles Morey is an American psychologist and an expert in diagnosis and psychiatric classification. [1] [2] He was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on May 4, 1956. Morey received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1977, and a Master of Science and Doctorate from University of Florida in clinical psychology in the years 1979 and 1981. Morey continued on to serve a clinical internship in 1981 at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. From 1981 to 1982 he worked at the Department of Psychology at the University of Tulsa. Beginning in 1982, and ending in 1984, he worked as the assistant professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, and then in 1984, he transferred to Vanderbilt University where he worked as the Professor of Psychology and the Director of Clinical Training until 1998. He worked at the Vanderbilt University until 1999. [3] Morey worked at Harvard Medical School from 1995 to 1996, and from 2006 to 2010 he was the head of the department of psychology at the Texas A&M University. Since 2012 he has worked as their George T. and Gladys H. Abell professor of Psychology. [4]
His research primarily concentrated on the fields of psychiatry and psychology. Specifically, personality, personality disorders, psychopathology, and alcoholism. [5] Morey has written over 280 articles and books on mental disorders, which have been cited more than 30,000 times. [6] He is in top 1% of cited researchers in the field of psychiatry. He has also developed the Personality Assessment Inventory, [7] [8] [9] which is one of the most commonly used screening methods in the field of psychiatry. [10] [11] [12] The American Psychiatric Association appointed him to the work group on Personality and Personality disorders for the DSM-5 due to his academic success, [4] where he worked on an alternative method of modeling personality disorders. [13]
For his work, he has been awarded the 2016 Presidential Award, the 2013 Walter Klopfer Award, and the 2017 Bruno Klopfer Award. [14] The APA also awarded the Distinguished Scientific Contributions award for his contributions to Clinical Psychology. [11] [15] Morey was also awarded the title "Outstanding Alumnus of the Year" in 2020 for "exemplary leadership in psychology research and education by the College of Public Health and Health Professions." [2] He was also the associate editor of the Journal of Personality Assessment from 2005 to 2007, and the journal Assessment from 1992 to 2004. He was also on the editorial board of the Journal of Psychopathology and Behavior Assessment , Psychological Bulletin , Contemporary Psychology . Currently, Morey serves on the editorial board of the journals Assessment, Journal of Personality Disorders , Personality Disorders: Theory, Research and Treatment , Psychological Assessment , Journal of Personality Assessment , Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation . The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is a publication by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for the classification of mental disorders using a common language and standard criteria. It is the main book for the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in the United States and is considered one of the principal guides of psychiatry, along with the International Classification of Diseases ICD, CCMD, and the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual. However, not all providers rely on the DSM-5 as a guide, since the ICD's mental disorder diagnoses are used around the world and scientific studies often measure changes in symptom scale scores rather than changes in DSM-5 criteria to determine the real-world effects of mental health interventions.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental disorder characterized by a life-long pattern of exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration, and a diminished ability to empathize with others' feelings. Narcissistic personality disorder is one of the sub-types of the broader category known as personality disorders. It is often comorbid with other mental disorders and associated with significant functional impairment and psychosocial disability.
Schizoid personality disorder is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency toward a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, detachment, and apathy. Affected individuals may be unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously possess a rich and elaborate but exclusively internal fantasy world. Other associated features include stilted speech, a lack of deriving enjoyment from most activities, feeling as though one is an "observer" rather than a participant in life, an inability to tolerate emotional expectations of others, apparent indifference when praised or criticized, a degree of asexuality, and idiosyncratic moral or political beliefs.
Dependent personality disorder (DPD) is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people. This personality disorder is a long-term condition in which people depend on others to meet their emotional and physical needs, with only a minority achieving normal levels of independence. Dependent personality disorder is a cluster C personality disorder, which is characterized by excessive fear and anxiety. It begins prior to early adulthood, and it is present in a variety of contexts and is associated with inadequate functioning. Symptoms can include anything from extreme passivity, devastation or helplessness when relationships end, avoidance of responsibilities, and severe submission.

The Psychopathy Checklist or Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised, now the Psychopathy Checklist—revised (PCL-R), is a psychological assessment tool that is commonly used to assess the presence and extent of the personality trait psychopathy in individuals—most often those institutionalized in the criminal justice system—and to differentiate those high in this trait from those with antisocial personality disorder, a related diagnosable disorder. It is a 20-item inventory of perceived personality traits and recorded behaviors, intended to be completed on the basis of a semi-structured interview along with a review of "collateral information" such as official records. The psychopath tends to display a constellation or combination of high narcississtic, borderline, and antisocial personality disorder traits, which includes superficial charm, charisma/attractiveness, sexual seductiveness and promiscuity, affective instability, suicidality, lack of empathy, feelings of emptiness, self-harm, and splitting. In addition, sadistic and paranoid traits are usually also present.
Lee Anna Clark is an American psychologist and William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Professor of Psychology Emerite in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, United States. She used to be a professor and collegiate fellow at the University of Iowa. She was, as of 2007, the director of clinical training in the Clinical Science Program. Prior to her appointment at the University of Iowa, she was a professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Her research focuses on personality and temperament, clinical and personality assessment, psychometrics, mood, anxiety, and depression.

Judith S. Beck is an American psychologist who is best known for her work in cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Her father is Aaron Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy, with whom she has worked on many occasions. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982.
Claude Robert Cloninger is an American psychiatrist and geneticist noted for his research on the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual foundation of both mental health and mental illness. He previously held the Wallace Renard Professorship of Psychiatry, and served as professor of psychology and genetics, as well as director of the Sansone Family Center for Well-Being at Washington University in St. Louis. Cloninger is a member of the evolutionary, neuroscience, and statistical genetics programs of the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University, and is recognized as an expert clinician in the treatment of general psychopathology, substance dependence, and personality disorders. Dr. Cloninger is currently professor emeritus.
Alan Edward Kazdin is Sterling Professor of Psychology and Child Psychiatry at Yale University. He is currently emeritus and was the director of the Yale Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic. Kazdin's research has focused primarily on the treatment of aggressive and antisocial behavior in children.
Donald Jay Cohen was an American psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and director of the Yale Child Study Center and the Sterling Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology at the Yale School of Medicine. According to the New York Times, he was "known for his scientific work, including fundamental contributions to the understanding of autism, Tourette's syndrome and other illnesses, and for his leadership in bringing together the biological and the psychological approaches to understanding psychiatric disorders in childhood"; his work "reshaped the field of child psychiatry". He was also known as an advocate for social policy, and for his work to promote the interests of children exposed to violence and trauma.
Vittorio Lingiardi is an Italian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Full Professor of Dynamic Psychology and past Director of the Clinical Psychology Specialization Program (2006-2013), Faculty of Medicine and Psychology, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. He has coordinated with Nancy McWilliams the second edition of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, the PDM-2.
Robert Frank Krueger is Hathaway Distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychology and Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. Robert attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed his clinical internship at Brown University. He is known for his research on personality psychology, clinical psychology, quantitative psychology, developmental psychology, personality disorders, behavioral genetics, and psychopathology. According to Krueger, the goal of his work is to "reduce the burden these problems place on society by working to understand why some people experience psychopathology, while others remain resilient." Krueger primarily studies the comorbidity between personality disorders and anxiety, as well as twins, heritability, personality development, conduct disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. He is the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Personality Disorders. He received the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions to Psychology in 2005. Krueger helped work on the section III diagnostic criteria of the Personality and Personality Disorders in the DSM-5. He is also one of the highest cited researchers according to the Web of Science.
The Hierarchical Taxonomy Of Psychopathology (HiTOP) consortium was formed in 2015 as a grassroots effort to articulate a classification of mental health problems based on recent scientific findings on how the components of mental disorders fit together. The consortium is developing the HiTOP model, a classification system, or taxonomy, of mental disorders, or psychopathology, aiming to prioritize scientific results over convention and clinical opinion. The motives for proposing this classification were to aid clinical practice and mental health research. The consortium was organized by Drs. Roman Kotov, Robert Krueger, and David Watson. At inception it included 40 psychologists and psychiatrists, who had a record of scientific contributions to classification of psychopathology The HiTOP model aims to address limitations of traditional classification systems for mental illness, such as the DSM-5 and ICD-10, by organizing psychopathology according to evidence from research on observable patterns of mental health problems.
Andrew E. Skodol is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona and Columbia University. Skodol is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Psychiatrists, and the World Psychiatric Association. He was also the President of the Association for Research on Personality Disorders and, in 2017, the American Psychopathological Association. He graduated from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. Skodol received his psychiatric training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he worked as an assistant professor until 1979, when he transferred to Columbia. Becoming a professor of Clinical Psychiatry from 1995 to 2007. From 2007 to 2008 he was the president of the Institute for Mental Health Research, and from 2008 to 2011 he helmed the Sunbelt Collaborative. Skodol helped write the DSM-5 and served as the chair for its work group on personality and Personality Disorders. While writing the DSM-5 he argued for the removal of Narcissistic personality disorder. From 200 to 2003 he was the deputy director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He also is the chair of the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study. With his research primarily focused on diagnosis, stress and psychosocial functioning, Borderline personality disorder, Avoidant personality disorder, Major depressive disorder, Schizotypal personality disorder, Schizophrenia, and personality disorders. Skodol also worked to identify differing levels of severity amongst personality disorders, new personality disorder traits, new types of personality disorders, and new general personality disorder criteria.
