Lewele John Modisenyane is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009, serving the Free State constituency. He lost his seat in the 2009 general election, in which he defected from the ANC to the opposition Congress of the People (COPE). In 2006, he was convicted of stealing from Parliament during the Travelgate scandal.
Modisenyane is from the eastern Free State. [1] During apartheid, he was an activist for the United Democratic Front, and after the ANC was unbanned in 1990 he worked as an organiser for the party in the province. [2]
In the 1994 general election, South Africa's first under universal suffrage, Modisenyane was elected to an ANC seat in the new National Assembly. [3] He served three terms in his seat, gaining re-election in 1999 and 2004, [4] [5] and represented the Free State constituency. After his re-election in 2004, he served briefly as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services: the ANC nominated him to the position in early May [6] but replaced him with Dennis Bloem in a reshuffle in late June. [7]
In January 2006, the Scorpions announced that they intended to pursue criminal charges against Modisenyane as part of the Travelgate scandal; he was one of several politicians accused of defrauding Parliament using false travel benefits claims. [8] In October 2006, he accepted a plea deal and pled guilty in the Cape High Court to one count of theft in relation to the receipt of R45,000 in service benefits. [9] He paid a fine of R25,000, in lieu of serving three years' imprisoned, and was also sentenced to a mandatory five years' imprisonment, suspended conditionally for five years. [9] He and other convicted politicians received a formal reprimand during a parliamentary sitting in March 2007. [10]
Ahead of the 2009 general election, Modisenyane announced that he would leave the ANC to join COPE, a newly formed breakaway party. He was listed 37th on COPE's national party list in the election [11] but did not secure a seat. In February 2010, the Sowetan reported that he was likely to be appointed to manage COPE's parliamentary office. [12]
Zwelethu Lukanyiso "Mighty" Madasa is a South African politician and lawyer who served in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2010, excepting a month-long hiatus in 2009. He represented the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC). He resigned from the National Assembly in September 2010 and became the Clerk of the Pan-African Parliament.
Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi is a South African politician who has been Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West province since November 2022. In August 2022, he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West, a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009.
Butana Moses Komphela was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly and Free State Provincial Legislature until 2019. He served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture and after that he held several positions in the Free State Executive Council from 2011 to 2019. He died of COVID-19-related illness in 2022.
Nikiwe Julia Num, also known as Nikiwe Mangqo, is a South African politician who has served as Mayor of the North West's Dr Kenneth Kaundra District Municipality since 2021. She formerly served in the North West Provincial Legislature, representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2004 to 2008 and then the Congress of the People (Cope) from 2009 to 2014. She has since rejoined the ANC, which nominated her to her current office during the 2021 local elections.
Ndleleni Moses Duma was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until his death in 2018. He also served in the National Assembly between 2009 and 2014. He was a Member of the North West Executive Council from 2004 to 2009 during the premiership of Edna Molewa; during the same period, he was convicted on theft charges in connection with his involvement in the Travelgate scandal during an earlier period of service in the national Parliament.
Dennis Victor Bloem is a South African politician who is currently serving as the national spokesperson of the Congress of the People (COPE). He represented COPE in the National Council of Provinces from 2009 to 2014 and before that he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament from 1994 to 2009. A former United Democratic Front activist in the Free State, Bloem defected from the ANC to COPE ahead of the 2009 general election.
