Leyburn Airfield is a former Royal Australian Air Force station located in Leyburn, Queensland. It was built in 1942 and operated until the end of World War II.
In March 1942, the construction of Leyburn Airfield was proposed. The Australian War Cabinet approved work to commence on 8 May 1942. [1] The construction of Leyburn Airfield followed the beginning of World War II, built to facilitate US heavy bombers in event of a Japanese invasion. This was done in the wake of the Battle of the Coral Sea. [2] The airfield is located 37 kilometres from Toowoomba in the Darling Downs region of southeast Queensland.[ citation needed ]
All of Leyburn Airfield's facilities had been completed by April 1943, with a total infrastructure of buildings and services able to cater for 450 personnel. Leyburn Airfield post-war operated as an airbase for multiple RAAF squadrons until 200 Flight RAAF disbanded at the airfield in December 1945, resulting in the airfield's desertion. [1]
In 1943, the airfield only operated 2 sealed runways installed in the Darling Downs countryside, and by July, was on a list of 17 unoccupied aerodromes situated within Queensland. The government intended to utilisation taxiways into hideout areas. [1] Out of the 16 that had been partly constructed, all were eventually abandoned. The northern ends of the two runways were connected by a sealed taxiway at an estimated width of 15.2m, which could accommodate a variety of aircraft despite its initial purpose of servicing only heavy bomber planes. [1]
Leyburn Airfield was constructed without any accommodation buildings, only a mess hall and kitchen in addition to ablution facilities and latrines. [1] The airfield did not have any operational buildings on the site, nor any hangars, bomb stores or blast pens. The airfield had two 12,000 US gallons (45,000 L) capacity underground petrol tanks, which were installed by the mid-1944. [1]
In April 1944 the US Army claimed that the Leyburn Airfield was completely developed by the efforts and resources supplied by the RAAF, and was also maintained, controlled, and operated by the RAAF. [1] A map that was produced by the RAAF in June 1945 depicted a 138 degree runway that was a total of 5,350 feet long by 150 feet wide (approximately 1.63 km by 45.7m). [1] In addition to another 36 degree runway that ran 7000 feet long by 150 feet wide (approximately 2.14 km by 45.7m). [1] In 1945, the 138 degree runway was used solely for the parking of aircraft due to its poor condition. The 36 degree runway was in moderate condition. A graveled taxiway in poor condition ran from the camp to the southern end of the 36 degree runway during the same time period. [1]
Due to the poor condition of Leyburn Airfield, maintenance inspections had to be carried out by personnel from 14 Operational Base Unit (OBU) from a RAAF Station situated in Lowood in 1945. A Main Roads Board repair and maintenance party was stationed at the airfield between January and October 1945 in order to keep the runways at Leyburn serviceable. [1]
The Airfield in Leyburn was host to many RAAF units between July 1944 and December 1945. The units consisted of 21 Squadron, 23 Squadron, 99 Squadron and 200 Special Duties Flight. All units stationed at Leyburn flew B-24 Liberator bombers. Both the No. 21 Squadron RAAF and No. 23 Squadron RAAF prior to B-24 Liberator bombers, flew Vultee Vengeance aircraft.RAAF Squadron 99 and 200 Special Duties Flight both in February 1945 formed at Leyburn Airfield. By late February 1945, the Leyburn Airfield was crowded with an estimated number of personnel on site between 1,000 to 1,300. RAAF Squadron 99 was eventually moved to Jondaryan in March 1945 due to the overcrowding. Soon afterwards, 200 Special Duties Flight moved in, and was also the last to leave Leyburn due to the overcrowding, disbanding in December 1945. [1]

Leyburn Airfield sat vacant for 2 years before the Australian Federal Government moved to close down the site. However, this proposal was contested in 1947 by the Warwick City Council in addition to the Rosenthal, Allora and Glengallan Shire councils who launched a joint protest to save the airfield which had a construction cost of £1,500,000. [3] The site closure was later further contested by the Pittsworth Shire Council in 1948. [4] Following the Department of Civil Aviation’s decision on classifying Leyburn Airfield as abandoned, the Federal Government sold the gravel on the runway which was it’s original goal. [3]
In 1949, the airfield held the 1949 Australian Grand Prix. Two of it’s runways were used as the race track. [1]
Archerfield Airport is a leased federal airport located in Archerfield, 11–12 km (6.8–7.5 mi) to the south of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. For some time, it was the primary airport in Brisbane, but it is now the secondary airport. During World War II, it was used as a Royal Australian Air Force station. Airport traffic peaked in the 1980s. In December 2010, a development plan was released for public comment and included a new parallel runway.
The Vultee A-31 Vengeance is an American dive bomber of World War II that was built by Vultee Aircraft. A modified version was designated A-35. The Vengeance was not used operationally by the United States, but was operated as a front-line aircraft by the British Royal Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, and the Indian Air Force in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. The A-31 remained in service with U.S. units until 1945, primarily in a target-tug role.
No. 200 Flight was a Royal Australian Air Force special duties flight of World War II. The flight was formed in February 1945 to support the Allied Intelligence Bureau (AIB) and saw action over Borneo and the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) from March that year until the end of the war in August. No. 200 Flight was disbanded in December 1945.
No. 12 Squadron was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) general purpose, bomber and transport squadron. The squadron was formed in 1939 and saw combat in the South West Pacific theatre of World War II. From 1941 to 1943, it mainly conducted maritime patrols off northern Australia. The squadron was based at Merauke in western New Guinea from November 1943 to July 1944, when it was withdrawn from operations. After being re-equipped, it operated as a heavy bomber unit from February 1945 until the end of the war. The squadron continued in this role until it was redesignated No. 1 Squadron RAAF in February 1948. The squadron was reformed in 1973 to operate transport helicopters but was again disbanded in 1989.
No. 24 Squadron is a Royal Australian Air Force squadron. The squadron was formed in 1940 and saw action as a bomber squadron during World War II serving in the Pacific theatre against the Japanese, and undertaking operations during the Battle of Rabaul, and the New Guinea, New Britain and Borneo campaigns. The squadron was disbanded in 1946 following the conclusion of hostilities, but was re-formed in 1951. From then until 2010 the squadron was an RAAF Reserve squadron located near Adelaide, South Australia; for part of this time, until 1960, the squadron continued to perform flying duties, before converting to a ground support role. In 2010, the squadron combined with Combat Support Unit Edinburgh to become a Permanent Air Force unit and it currently forms part of No. 96 Wing, Combat Support Group.
No. 99 Squadron was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) heavy bomber squadron that was raised during World War II. Formed late in the war, the squadron ultimately did not see action as it became combat ready just as the war came to an end. After the war, it undertook general transportation duties before being disbanded in mid-1946.
No. 21 Squadron RAAF is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Airbase Operations squadron. Formed in the mid-1930s as a unit of the part-time Citizen Air Force (CAF), it was mobilised for service during World War II, when it saw action against the Japanese as a fighter unit in the Malayan campaign, a dive bomber unit in the New Guinea campaign, and a heavy bomber unit in the Borneo campaign. After the war, the squadron continued to fly until 1960, when the CAF ceased flying operations. At that time, No. 21 Squadron converted to a non-flying support role, which it currently fulfils at RAAF Base Point Cook and RAAF Williams - Laverton.
No. 23 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is a non-flying base operations and training squadron headquartered at RAAF Base Amberley near Brisbane, Queensland. The squadron was formed in 1937 and saw action against the Japanese during World War II as a bomber squadron. Operating from Archerfield during the early stages of the war, the squadron undertook maritime patrols off Australia's east coast before converting to a dive-bomber role and taking part in the New Guinea campaign. Later in the war, the squadron converted to Liberator heavy bombers and flew missions against Japanese targets in the Netherlands East Indies. After the war, No. 23 Squadron was used to reform No. 6 Squadron and was then re-raised as a Citizens Air Force unit based in Brisbane. Until 1960, the squadron flew jet fighter aircraft before converting to a ground support role and now forms part of the RAAF's Combat Support Group.
No. 25 Squadron is a general reserve squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It is based at RAAF Base Pearce in Perth, Western Australia, and forms part of the Combat Support Group. The squadron was formed in early 1937 and until early 1939 was designated as No. 23 Squadron. During World War II, it provided local air defence for the Perth region, before undertaking Army co-operation duties in 1943–1944 and then converting to a heavy bomber role in 1945. Flying B-24 Liberators, the squadron took part in operations against Japanese targets in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) and supported Allied ground operations during the Borneo Campaign.
Mungalalu Truscott Airbase or Truscott-Mungalalu Airport, which during World War II was known as Truscott Airfield is today a commercial airport in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Camden Airport is an aerodrome located on the outskirts of Sydney, 1 nautical mile northwest of Camden, New South Wales, Australia. The airport is located approximately 60 km (37 mi) from Sydney's central business district. Camden is used as a general aviation overflow airport for the busier Bankstown Airport, and provides facilities for gliding and ballooning. The aerodrome has one grass runway and one paved runway and two glider airstrips. It is in the south-west corner of the designated Sydney flight training area.
Fenton Airfield was a World War II military airfield in the Northern Territory of Australia located at Tipperary Station in what is now the locality of Douglas-Daly and named after flight lieutenant Clyde Fenton.
Breddan Aerodrome is a heritage-listed abandoned aerodrome at Gregory Developmental Road, Breddan, Charters Towers Region, Queensland, Australia. It is located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of Charters Towers. It was built from 1942 to 1943 by Allied Works Council and Queensland Main Roads Commission. The airfield was constructed for the USAAF 38th Bomb Group in August 1942 as a satellite field for Charters Towers Airport, and later used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II as a maintenance base. Consisting of two runways, the airfield was abandoned after 1948. Today, the remains of the airfield consist of some deteriorating runways, taxiways and hardstands, mostly being reclaimed by grassland and shrub. No buildings have survived. It is also known as Breddan Airfield and Breddan WWII Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Salvage Depot. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 16 April 2010.
The Port Moresby Airfield Complex was a World War II military airfield complex, built near Port Moresby in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. It was used during the Battle of New Guinea as a base of Allied air operations primarily in 1942 and early 1943. It later became a support base as the battle moved to the north and western part of New Guinea. It was closed and the facility turned over to civil authorities after the end of the War in September 1945.
No. 77 Wing was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) wing of World War II. It formed part of No. 10 Operational Group at its establishment in November 1943, when it comprised three squadrons equipped with Vultee Vengeance dive bombers. No. 77 Wing commenced operations in early 1944, flying out of Nadzab, Papua New Guinea. Soon afterwards, however, the Vengeance units were withdrawn from combat and replaced with squadrons flying Douglas Bostons, Bristol Beaufighters and Bristol Beauforts. The wing saw action in the assaults on Noemfoor, Tarakan, and North Borneo, by which time it was an all-Beaufighter formation made up of Nos. 22, 30 and 31 Squadrons. It was to have taken part in the Battle of Balikpapan in June 1945, but unsuitable landing grounds meant that the Beaufighter units were withdrawn to Morotai, sitting out the remainder of the war before returning to Australia, where they disbanded, along with the wing headquarters, in 1946.
Royal Air Force Greencastle or more simply RAF Greencastle is a former Royal Air Force airfield located 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the fishing village of Kilkeel and took in a large part of Cranfield Bay.
721 Naval Air Squadron was a Naval Air Squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm (FAA). 721 Naval Air Squadron formed at HMS Gadwall, RNAS Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of March 1945, as a Fleet Requirements Unit for the British Pacific Fleet. Initially equipped with Vultee Vengeance target tugs, it arrived at HMS Nabaron, RNAS Ponam, Admiralty Islands in May 1945, and commenced operations towing targets. The squadron moved to HMS Nabsford, RNAMY Archerfield, Brisbane, Australia, during October and then relocated to Hong Kong at the beginning of 1946, moving to HMS Nabcatcher, RNAS Kai Tak, where it eventually disbanded at the end of 1947.
North-Western Area Command was one of several geographically based commands raised by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II. Its wartime sphere of operations included the Northern Territory, adjacent portions of Queensland and Western Australia, and the Dutch East Indies. The command was formed in January 1942, following the outbreak of the Pacific War, from the western part of Northern Area Command, which had covered all of northern Australia and Papua. Headquartered at Darwin, North-Western Area Command was initially responsible for air defence, aerial reconnaissance and protection of the sea lanes within its boundaries.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operated Vultee Vengeance dive bombers during World War II. The Australian Government ordered 297 of the type in late 1941 as part of efforts to expand the RAAF. This order was later increased to 400 aircraft. A few Vengeances arrived in Australia during 1942, and large-scale deliveries commenced in early 1943; further orders were cancelled in 1944 after 342 had been delivered.
