Background

Flores was born to a Brazilian mother and a British father. In her youth, she listened to bossa nova artists such as Astrud Gilberto. She developed an interest in 1960s folk music in her late teens. Both of these genres would later go on to inspire her own career as a singer-songwriter. [5] [6]

In 2022, Flores graduated with a first in Zoology from the University of St Andrews. [5]

Career

Flores released two EPs The Water's Fine! and Recently in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Flores first gained viral traction in 2021 from her 2019 song "Rises the Moon". [7]

Flores appeared as a special guest for fellow jazz-inspired singer-songwriter Laufey's Everything I Know About Love debut album tour in 2022. [8]

In 2024, Flores signed with Verve Records. [9] Her debut album Flower of the Soul was released on 28 June 2024. [10] [11] Her first headlining tour began in June 2024 as a month-long tour through the UK and the US. [12] Her debut album tour through the United States, UK, Europe and Asia began in September 2024. [13] Flores also opened for Matt Maltese that year. [14]

Artistry

Flores cites Vashti Bunyan, [15] Caetano Veloso, [16] Nick Drake and Joan Baez [5] as influences. She also cites that her musical inspirations came generally from bossa nova and folk records from her mother's CD collection. [16]

Her debut album title Flower of the Soul is a tribute to Kate Bush. She also references the poets William Wordsworth and Walt Whitman. [17] [18]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bossa nova</span> Style of Brazilian music

Bossa nova is a relaxed style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a calm syncopated rhythm with chords and fingerstyle mimicking the beat of a samba groove, as if it was a simplification and stylization on the guitar of the rhythm produced by a samba school band. Another defining characteristic of the style is the use of unconventional chords in some cases with complex progressions and "ambiguous" harmonies. A common misconception is that these complex chords and harmonies were derived from jazz, but samba guitar players have been using similar arrangement structures since the early 1920s, indicating a case of parallel evolution of styles rather than a simple transference from jazz to bossa nova. Nevertheless, bossa nova was influenced by jazz, both in the harmonies used and also by the instrumentation of songs, and today many bossa nova songs are considered jazz standards. The popularity of bossa nova has helped to renew samba and contributed to the modernization of Brazilian music in general.
