Lilian Estella Patel (born 2 February 1951) [1] is a Malawian politician. She has represented Mangochi South in the National Assembly for the United Democratic Front (UDF) since 2014 and previously from 1994 to 2009. [2] [3] She has served as a minister with a number of portfolios. In 2024 she was appointed as the Chair of the UDF.
Patel joined the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the early 1990s [4] and she first represented Mangochi South in 1994. [5]
Patel was the Minister of Women's and Children's Affairs, Community Development and Social Welfare from 1996 to 1999. In 1996 she was one of nine women among the 177 members of the parliament. The idea of a women's caucus was put forward and the nine politicians put aside their party allegiances to work together. They wanted to make sure that whenever there was an issue that was related to women then they would act together. Patel became the first chair of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus. [6]
There were more women in Malawi's parliament after the 1999 elections and Patel one of them. She continued to chair the caucus. Women related issues were debated in parliament but there was little related change to the law. [7]
Patel served as Minister of Health from 1999 to 2000 and as foreign minister of Malawi from 2000 to 2004. [8] After serving as foreign minister, she was Minister of Labour and Vocational Training from 2004 to 2005.[ citation needed ]
She lost the election to Yusuf Matumula in 2009 [9] but she regained the seat in 2014. [10]
She has represented Mangochi South in the National Assembly for the United Democratic Front since 2014, [11] [12] She was called one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in 2024 who was loyal to her party. [10]
In 2024 UDF National Convention in Blantyre gathered 1,200 delegates. It was announced that former President Bakili Muluzi was to take the role of patron to the party. He appointed Patel as the chair of the UDF lauding her integrity. [4] She had been identified by Parliament's First Deputy Madalitso Kazombo as a "respectable female parliamentarian" together with Mary Mpanga and Roseby Gadama in September 2024. [13]
Elson Bakili Muluzi is a Malawian politician who was President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. He was also chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) until 2009. He succeeded Hastings Kamuzu Banda as Malawi's president. He also served in Banda's cabinet as minister without portfolio, before retiring in 1980.

Rodwell Thomas Changara Munyenyembe was a Malawian politician who served twice as Speaker of the National Assembly, from 1994 to 1999 and again from 2004 until his death. He also twice served as a cabinet minister, in the governments of Hastings Banda and Bakili Muluzi. He worked as a teacher prior to entering politics.

Justin Chimera Malewezi was a Malawian politician and a Member of Parliament for Ntchisi North in the Central Region of Malawi. He was Vice-President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. Malewezi quit the United Democratic Front in 2004 and eventually represented the People's Progressive Movement in the 2004 general election, in which he garnered 2.5% of the total national vote.
General elections were held in Malawi on 19 May 2009. Incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika ran for re-election; his main opponent was John Tembo, the president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Five other candidates also ran. The election was won by Mutharika, who was re-elected to the Presidency with around two-thirds of the vote. Mutharika's DPP also won a strong parliamentary majority.
Atupele Muluzi is a Malawian politician, businessman and was a Member of Parliament for Machinga North East constituency from 2004 until May 27, 2019. He is also the President of the United Democratic Front and was a presidential candidate during the 2019 election. He was a running mate in the 2020 presidential elections, on a coalition ticket with incumbent President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party. Muluzi was Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining from 2014 to 2015 and the only opposition member to serve in the Mutharika administration. Subsequently, he served as Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security in 2015, and then Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development in 2015. He is the son of the former president Bakili Muluzi.
