Limerick Sport Eagles is an Irish basketball team based in Limerick. The team competes in the National League Division One and plays its home games at the University of Limerick's Sport Arena.

History

Early years

Prior to the late 1990s, Limerick's presence in the Irish National League was represented by Marathon Basketball Club. [1] In 1999, Marathon's National League team became known as Burger King Limerick. [2]

In 2002, Burger King Limerick celebrated their first-ever Irish Cup title after defeating Star of the Sea in the final. [3] [4] [5] A year earlier, American Cleotis Brown was named Basketball Ireland Foreign Player of the Year. [6] [7]

In 2004, Marathon Basketball Club was renamed Limerick Lions Basketball Club, and thus, Burger King Limerick became Limerick Lions. [8]

UL Eagles

In 2009, Limerick Lions Basketball Club parted ways with the National League team. As a result, the University of Limerick absorbed the team and rebranded it as UL Eagles. [9]

In February 2012, UL Eagles won their first National Cup title since 2002 after defeating UCC Demons in the final. [10] [11] Eagles went on to win a historic National League title in March 2012, [12] and backed that up in 2013 by defending their title. [13] In February 2015, long-time servant of the team, Welshman Matt Hall, announced his retirement after 15 years of playing in Limerick. [14]

After finishing last in the Super League table in 2016–17, UL Eagles were demoted to the Basketball Ireland Men's Division One National League for the 2017–18 season. [15] [16] [17] However, in September 2017, the team withdrew from the National League entirely. [18] The team returned as the UL Sport Eagles in the National League Division One in the 2018–19 season. [19] They continued in Division One as UL Sport Eagles in the 2019–20 season. [20]

Limerick Sport Eagles

In 2020, the team was renamed Limerick Sport Eagles. [21] The 2020–21 Division One season did not go ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [22] [23] [24] The Limerick Sport Eagles continued in Division One in the 2021–22 season. [25] In 2022–23, the team reached the Division One final. [26]

Wexford Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Crossabeg, County Wexford. They compete in the League of Ireland First Division. The club joined the league after being awarded a First Division licence for the 2007 League of Ireland season. The opportunity to join the League of Ireland arose as Dublin City became bankrupt before the end of the 2006 season, leaving an uneven number of clubs. The 2007 season coincided with the takeover of the running of the league by the FAI and all existing clubs had to apply for entry into what was effectively a new league. Limerick was the only existing club refused a licence and so Wexford Youths and Limerick 37 were admitted to the new league. The club alternate their colours between plain black and pink and black. The club rebranded for the start of the 2017 season by dropping the 'Youths' from their title and changing the club crest.

UCC Demons are an Irish basketball team based in Cork. The team competes in the Super League and plays its home games at Mardyke Arena. The team is a division of Blue Demons Basketball Club and is directly associated with the University College Cork.

Tadhg Flynn is an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with Causeway, having previously played with Ahane from 2008 to 2011 and had been a member of the Limerick senior inter-county team from 2010 to 2011. He had previously played with local club Causeway and the Kerry senior inter-county team. As of the 2019-2020 season, the IT Tralee hurling team were being managed by Flynn.

Ulster Elks was an Irish men's basketball team based in Jordanstown, Northern Ireland. The team competed in the Irish Super League and National League Division 1 and played its home games at the Ulster University Sports Centre. They also played in the Basketball Northern Ireland Premier League. The team was a division of Ulster Elks Basketball Club and was directly associated with Ulster University.

The League of Ireland Women's Premier Division is a professional women's association football league in the Republic of Ireland, organised by the League of Ireland, which began play in the 2023 season. The league consists of eleven teams, eight of which owned by clubs with men's teams in the League of Ireland's Premier Division or First Division. The premiers of the league qualify for the first round of the UEFA Women's Champions League in the following season.

Jason Killeen is an Irish professional basketball player. Between 2004 and 2009, Killeen played college basketball in the United States for Winthrop and Augusta State. He played 14 years with the Irish national team.

Karen Duggan is an Irish footballer who plays for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL). She has previously played for UCD Waves and the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Between 2013 and 2016 Duggan was selected for the WNL Team of the Season for four successive seasons. She was the only player selected all four seasons. With a first-place finish and a 17–1 win–loss record, Killester were crowned league champions for the eighth time in their history. UCC Demons were crowned National Cup champions for a sixth time, and won the season finale Champions Trophy tournament for the second straight year.

The season featured 8 teams from across the Republic of Ireland, with the regular season beginning on 28 September 2012 and ending on 9 March 2013. With a first-place finish and a 16–5 win–loss record, UL Eagles were crowned league champions for the second straight year. Neptune were crowned National Cup champions for the first time in 21 years, while UCC Demons won the inaugural season finale Champions Trophy tournament.

Gearóid M. Hegarty is an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer who plays as a right wing-forward for club side St Patrick's and at inter-county level with the Limerick senior hurling team. He is a former member of the Limerick senior football team.

Joy Neville is a former Ireland women's rugby union international and a current rugby union referee. As a player, Neville represented Ireland at both the 2006 and 2010 Women's Rugby World Cups. In 2009 Neville captained the first Ireland team to defeat France. In 2013 she was also a member of the first Ireland women's team to win the Six Nations, Grand Slam and Triple Crown titles.

The 2018 League of Ireland Premier Division was the 34th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division. The league began on 16 February 2018 and concluded on 26 October 2018.

Treaty United Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Limerick. The club was founded in 2020 following the demise of Limerick F.C. and began playing in the League of Ireland in 2021. They play their home matches at Markets Field, the same ground as their predecessors.
