Lindsay Dougherty (born 1983/1984 [1] ) is an American labor leader. Since May 2022, she has been Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 399. In that capacity she represents more than 6500 Hollywood workers. Dougherty is also director of the Teamsters Motion Picture and Theatrical Trade Division and Western Region Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. In all three positions, she is the first woman to hold the role.

Early life

Dougherty grew up in Detroit, where her father Pat Dougherty was a Teamster for 40 years and served as Secretary-Treasurer of Local 337. [2]

Career

As a teenager in 2001, Dougherty had her first job in the movie business as a background actor in the film 61* . [2] She subsequently worked in transportation. [2]

In 2006 Dougherty moved to Los Angeles and joined Local 399. [3] In 2014 she became a business agent for the local, and the next year an organizer. [3] In 2021, she served as the point person for the Teamsters’ negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). [3] The resulting contract secured a three-percent annual wage increase, as well as increased health and pension contributions. [3]

In November 2021, while Recording Secretary of Local 399, Dougherty was elected Western Region Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) on a slate with Sean O'Brien, in his successful campaign to become IBT President. [4] She assumed the role on March 22, 2022, when she was also appointed by O’Brien to be director of the Teamsters’ Motion Picture and Theatrical Trade Division. [5] In May 2022, [3] Dougherty was appointed Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 399; she was re-elected on an unopposed slate in September 2022. [6] In that capacity she represents more than 6500 Hollywood workers. [3] In all three positions, Dougherty is the first woman to hold the role. [2]

Personal life

Dougherty’s sister, husband, father-in-law and stepson are all Teamsters as well. [1] She has a tattoo on her left arm of Jimmy Hoffa, who served as the president of the Teamsters from 1957 to 1971. [7]

In 2018, Hoffa was elected chair of the Road Transport Section of the International Transport Workers' Federation at its quadrennial Congress in Singapore. Hoffa is the second-longest serving General President of the Teamsters Union, after Dan Tobin, who served from 1907 to 1952. Hoffa's final term as General President ended in 2022.

Joseph Paul Glimco was an Italian-American labor leader and well-known organized crime figure based in Chicago. He was considered "Chicago's top labor racketeer" in the 1950s. One high-ranking Chicago Teamsters leader noted in 1954, "He is the mob. When he opens his mouth, it's the syndicate talking". Glimco was active in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) and a close associate of Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa. He was a capo in the Chicago Outfit, an organized crime syndicate, and oversaw the syndicate's labor racketeering efforts. Gregory Floyd is the President of Teamsters Local 237, City Employees Union in New York, a position he has held since March 30, 2007.

John Francis English was an American labor union official. A member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), he was appointed as its Secretary-Treasurer by union president Daniel J. Tobin in 1946, and was re-elected to this post at every subsequent Teamsters convention until his death in February 1969 at the age of 80. The organisation itself described English as the "greatest Secretary-Treasurer" it had encountered.

William Eugene Bufalino was an American attorney who represented the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) from 1947 until 1971. He retired in 1982. Bufalino worked closely with Jimmy Hoffa until 1971. Bufalino died on May 12, 1990.

Sean O'Brien is an American labor leader who is the General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He formerly served as the Vice President Eastern Region of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). O'Brien was the youngest person elected as President of Teamsters Local Union 25 and was the Secretary-Treasurer of New England Joint Council 10. O'Brien resigned from Local 25 and Joint Council 10 on March 1, 2022, in order to serve full-time as General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. O'Brien was sworn into office as the 11th General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters at the union's headquarters in Washington, D.C., on March 22, 2022.

Leo Tautua Tanoa'i Reed was an American labor leader and the longtime director of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Motion Picture and Theatrical Trades Division. Reed first became a business agent for the Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) in 1973, where his natural leadership and charisma attracted the attention of Hawaii labor leader Art Rutledge, who recruited him to be a business agent for Hawaii Teamsters Local 996 in 1975.

Ron Herrera is an American labor leader, who served as the President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor until his resignation on October 10, 2022, following racist comments made regarding black & indigenous peoples. Herrera also served as the Secretary-Treasurer of his home union, Teamsters Local 396, until his resignation on October 10, 2022; he had become a Teamsters member there in 1975 while working as a United Parcel Service package driver.

On July 14, 2023, the American actors' union SAG–AFTRA went on strike over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). It has coincided with a Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike as part of broader Hollywood labor disputes.
