Linus Kipwambok Chumba (born 9 February 1980) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who formerly competing in the 3000 metres steeplechase and currently competes in half marathons and marathons. He has a personal best of 8:11.98 minutes for the steeplechase, set in 2005. He represented Kenya at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and shared in the team gold medals.
He made his first impact on the international circuit in 2003, finishing second in the steeplechase at the Hanžeković Memorial with a best of 8:19.26 minutes – enough to rank him in the top thirty for the year. [1] He dropped outside the global top 100 the following year, [2] but rebounded in 2005 with a best of 8:11.98 minutes at the Golden Gala in Rome, which placed him 16th in the world. [3] He did not compete in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and only ran in Kenya in 2008. [4]
Chumba returned to action and gained his first national call-up after a fourth-place finish at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships. [5] At the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships he came 25th – the lowest of the Kenyan athletes – and shared in the team gold medals. On the track circuit in 2009, he came second in the steeplechase at the Barcelona Meeting and had a season's best of 8:14.51 minutes in Athens, returning to the global top twenty again. [6]
In July 2010 he had his first major win on the 2010 IAAF Diamond League series, setting a meeting record to win at the British Grand Prix in Gateshead. [7] That season he was fifth at both the Colorful Daegu Championships Meeting and the DN Galan – at the latter meeting he ran 8:18.48 minutes to place 22nd on the world lists for the season. [8] His sole significant outing of 2011 was a run of 8:24.10 minutes at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, ranking him outside the world top 50. [9] This was his last appearance on the international track and field circuit.
From 2012 onwards he began to focus on road running competition in the United States instead. In 2013 he ran a half marathon best of 62:33 minutes and at the 2014 Macau Marathon he finished in 2:15:20 hours. [4]

Saif Saaeed Shaheen, formerly Stephen Cherono, is a steeplechase runner. He was born in Keiyo, Kenya but now he represents Qatar. He was, for 19 years, the world record holder for 3000 metre steeplechase. He is a two time World Champion in the event. His older brother Abraham Cherono is also a steeplechase runner.
Tareq Mubarak Taher, born as Dennis Kipkurui Sang, is a middle-distance runner who represents Bahrain after changing nationality from Kenya. His speciality is the 3000 metres steeplechase. His personal best time of 8:06.13 minutes is also the Bahraini national record, set on 13 July 2009 at the Athens Grand Prix Tsiklitiria.
Paul Kipsiele Koech is a Kenyan runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He won the 2004 Olympic bronze medal in this event. His personal best of 7:54.31 minutes is the third fastest of all time.
Günther Weidlinger is an Austrian long-distance runner who is a former 3000 metres steeplechase specialist but now competes in the marathon.
Michael Kipkorir Kipyego is a Kenyan runner who competes in marathon races. He was initially a specialist in the 3000 metres steeplechase and was the 2002 World Junior Champion in the event. He represented Kenya in the steeplechase at the World Championships in 2003 and was runner-up at the 2008 African Championships. He set a personal best of 8:08.48 hours in 2009.
Ronald Kipchumba Rutto is a Kenyan long-distance runner.
Steve Slattery is an American track and field athlete who is a steeplechase specialist. He has a personal record 8:15.69 minutes for the event and was the 2003 American outdoor champion. He has represented the United States at the World Championships in Athletics on two occasions and has also competed at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2006 IAAF World Cup.
Hillary Kipsang Yego is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the steeplechase. He has a personal best of 8:03.57 minutes for the event. He was the gold medallist at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Athletics.
Bethwell Birgen is a Kenyan middle-distance runner. His personal best of 3:30.77 minutes for the 1500 metres ranks him among the top fifty ever for the event, while his indoor best of 3:34.65 minutes is among the top twenty. He represented Kenya in the 1500 m at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, but did not make the final on either occasion.
Jairus Kipchoge Birech is a Kenyan steeplechase runner. He holds a personal best time of 7:58.41 minutes for the 3000 metres steeplechase, which ranks him among the top ten of all time. He was the gold medallist at the 2014 African Championships in Athletics and silver medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
John Chepkwony Kipkoech is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in the 5000 metres. He represented Kenya in the event at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. He was a silver medallist at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics and a junior team gold medallist at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. His personal best of 12:49.50 minutes ranks him in the top twenty all-time runners for the 5000 m.
Jonathan Muia Ndiku is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He has a personal best of 8:07.75 minutes. He was the gold medallist in the event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where he broke the Commonwealth Games record.
Purity Cherotich Kirui is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She holds a personal best of 9:19.42 minutes for the event. She was the gold medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics.
Philip Barkutwo is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who specialised in the 3000 metres steeplechase. His personal best of 8:05.37 minutes, set in 1992, ranked him the third fastest ever at the time and still ranks within the all-time top thirty. He was the gold medallist at the 1992 IAAF World Cup.
George Kiprotich "Kip" Rono is a Kenyan former steeplechase runner. He won a gold medal in the event at the 1979 African Championships in Athletics and was the first African steeplechase winner at the 1979 IAAF World Cup.
John Kibet Koech is a Kenyan-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. He specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase and was the winner of the event at the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships. His elder brother Isiah is an Olympic long-distance runner.
Raymond Kipkorir Yator is a Kenyan former steeplechase athlete. He was a former world junior record holder and world junior champion for the steeplechase. His personal best of 8:03.74 minutes ranks him with the all-time top 25 for the event. He was a finalist at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics.
Eliud Barngetuny is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who specialised in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He was a continental bronze medallist at both the 1992 African Championships in Athletics and the 1995 All-Africa Games.
Beatrice Chepkoech Sitonik is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She won gold medals at the 2019 World Championships and 2018 African Championships and silver medal at the 2023 World Championships. In the 1500 metres, Chepkoech took silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2015 African Games. She is the world record holder for the 3000 m steeplechase with a time of 8:44.32 set in 2018 in Monaco. With that mark she became the first woman to break the 8:50 and 8:45 barriers in the event.
Abraham Kibiwot is a Kenyan steeplechase runner. He was a bronze medallist at the African Championships in Athletics in 2016. His personal best is 8:09.25 minutes, set in 2016.
