Lisa A. Kitko is an American nurse scientist and academic administrator serving as dean of the University of Rochester School of Nursing and vice president of the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Life

Kitko earned a B.S.N. in 1990 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. [1] She earned a M.S.N. in clinical nurse specialist and adult health (2001) and a Ph.D. in nursing with a minor in gerontology (2010) from the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) College of Nursing. [1]

From 1990 to 2002, Kitko worked as a nurse and later nurse administrator in Pennsylvania. [1] She joined faculty at the PSU College of Nursing as an instructor in May 2002. [1] She was promoted to assistant professor in July 2011 and associate professor with tenure in July 2017. [1] Kitko was inducted as a fellow of the American Heart Association in 2015 and the American Academy of Nursing in 2017. [2] She served as the associate dean of graduate education and director of the Ph.D. program from 2020 to 2022. [1]

Kitko joined the University of Rochester September 2022 as a professor of nursing and dean of the school of nursing. [1] She also became vice president of the University of Rochester Medical Center. [1] In 2023, she was jointly appointed as the Independence Foundation Chair in Nursing Education. [3]

As a result of her work to change hospital visiting policies, Fagin is considered to be one of the founders of family centered care and is the first woman to serve as president of an Ivy League university.

Afaf Ibrahim Meleis is an Egyptian-American nurse-scientist, researcher, and medical sociologist. She is a Professor of Nursing and Sociology and Dean Emerita at the University of Pennsylvania, where she served from 2002 through 2014. Luther Parmalee Christman was an American nurse, professor of nursing, university administrator and advocate for gender and racial diversity in nursing. His career included service with the Michigan Department of Mental Health and academic posts at the University of Michigan, Vanderbilt University and Rush University. In 1967, Christman became the first man to hold the position of dean at a nursing school.

Rhetaugh Etheldra Graves Dumas (1928–2007) was an American nurse, professor, and health administrator. Dumas was the first Black woman to serve as a dean at the University of Michigan. She served as the dean of the University of Michigan Nursing School. She also served as deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health, becoming the first nurse, female, or African-American to hold that position. She is said to have been the first nurse to use the scientific method to conduct experiments that evaluated nursing practices.

The Indiana University School of Nursing is an academic college of higher education connected to Indiana University with its main research and educational facilities on the Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis campus and at Indiana University Bloomington. The School offers nursing programs and clinical training at all of IU's regional campuses and IU Health hospitals in Indiana, as well as online. It is known for its nursing research and education, scholarship of teaching and nursing practice, and for its collaborations with IU hospitals and clinical partners. Established in 1914 as the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, it awarded its first nursing diplomas in 1917 and was renamed the IU School of Nursing in 1956. Rozella May Schlotfeldt was an American nurse, educator, and researcher. Originally from DeWitt, Iowa, Schlotfeldt received her BS in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1935. She continued her studies at the University of Chicago in 1947 before becoming the dean of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in 1960.

Bernadette J. Mazurek Melnyk is an American nurse. She is a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Ohio State University College of Medicine and dean of the College of Nursing. Melnyk is also the editor in chief of the journal Worldviews on Evidence Based Nursing.
