The following is a list of major, recurring, notable and minor characters appeared in Indio , a Filipino historical drama-epic fantasy series created and developed by Suzette Doctolero and produced by GMA Network. It executive produced by Meann P. Regala and directed by Dondon Santos. The series premiered on January 14, 2013, on GMA Telebabad block, and January 15, 2013, worldwide via GMA Pinoy TV. It concluded its twenty weeks run on May 31, 2013, with the total of ninety-seven episodes. [1]

The series features eleven main characters throughout its run.

Malaya / Simeon / Indio

Portrayed by Bong Revilla, he is the show's main protagonist and also, the demigod son of Ynaguiguinid, a goddess of war, and Hangaway, a native warrior. As a demigod, he possesses godly powers and immense superhuman strength that truly makes him the destined savior of both his fellow Filipinos and diwatas from the Spanish colonists. The character is also portrayed by Vincent Magbanua and Alden Richards in the first part of the show. [2] [3] GMA Network's vice president for Entertainment TV, Lilybeth Rasonable said that "Indio was really made for him [Revilla]." [4] Revilla finds his very first television series "exciting but very challenging" and went through rigorous acting trainings under director Laurice Guillen and Pen Medina for his preparation for the role. [5] He also did some readings and research regarding Philippine history because "even though it is a fictional show, it has some historical undertones that should at least have some sense of accuracy." Esperanza Sanreal

Portrayed by Jennylyn Mercado, she is a Mestiza and the estranged illegitimate daughter of Juancho Sanreal with Maria, a native Filipina he raped. She eventually falls in love with Simeon/Malaya, her father's slave and later, formidable nemesis. [3] [8]

Señor Juancho Sanreal

Portrayed by Michael de Mesa, he is the show's main antagonist. Juancho is the son of Antonio Sanreal, a lieutenant under conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. He is the domineering husband of Victoria and the estranged father of Esperanza. Juancho was trained by his father to be a despotic encomendero like him to put the subjugated natives under control. Juancho rules the encomienda with an iron fist, determined to take down anyone who dares to get in his way. Juancho adopted and raised Simeon/Malaya to use his incredible powers and abilities for his own personal gain. The character was also played by Lucho Ayala in the first part of the series. [9]

Dian Magayon

Portrayed by Rhian Ramos, the goddess of wind and all flying creatures. Magayon serves as the protector and mentor of Malaya/Simeon throughout his journey to fulfill destiny. The character also serves as the narrator (in voice-over) of the show [10] [11] [12]

Señora Victoria Hidalgo de Sanreal

Portrayed by Jackie Lou Blanco, she is a peninsulares and the sterile wife of Juancho Sanreal. Her bitter nature turns her into an intolerable shrew. She deeply loathes Esperanza for being her husband's daughter from another woman. The character was initially played by Nathalie Hart as the young version of the character. [13] [14]

Hernando Pelaez

Portrayed by Chinggoy Alonzo, he is a peninsular who serves as the right-hand man of Juancho Sanreal. Hernando is a tough-looking man with noble virtues, but he is constantly torn between his conscience and his unfathomable loyalty to Juancho. Bobby Andrews portrayed the younger version of the character in the first part of the series.

Tarong and Linang

Portrayed by Dante Rivero and Daria Ramirez respectively, they are a childless native couple who adopted and raised young Malaya/Simeon as their child. Eventually, they are blessed with another child named Mayang. The characters were first portrayed by Jomari Yllana and Agot Isidro, respectively, in the early part of the series. [15]

Cosme de los Santos

Portrayed by Robert Arevalo, he is the loving and protective father of Rosa. He works as both a fisherman and a sacristan of Jacobe, an Augustinian friar. In secret, he is a member of a rebel organization which aims to free their land from the colonists. Cosme is strongly against Rosa's relationship with Simeon because of his affiliation with Juancho Sanreal, seeing him as the biggest obstacle for the group's objective of freeing their land from the Spaniards. Mayang

Portrated by Sheena Halili, she is the care-free and tomboyish daughter of Tarong and Linang. However, her adventurous nature eventually leads her to fall into the hands of bandits called mangangayaw and then the Spaniards. Her journey eventually brought her to her adoptive brother, Simeon/Malaya.

Elena Decena

Portrayed by Vaness del Moral, she is the daughter of Alicia, Rosa's cousin. In order to pay for her parents' debt, she works as a maidservant to Sanreal's household during which she becomes close friends with Esperanza Sanreal. She eventually becomes a hapless victim of Juancho's lustful advances. [15] [16]

Tuhay / Cesario

Portrayed by Dominic Roco, he is a native warrior who hates Simeon and love-interest of Mayang. When his village was attacked by the Spaniards, he becomes an auxiliary soldier in their service and eventually, he becomes a Babaylan when the natives revolted. [9] Actor Rocco Nacino was originally cast as Tuhay but later replaced by Roco for the said role.

Apúng Sinukuan is the Kapampangan sun god of war and death who lived on Mount Arayat. During the colonial period, the Spanish rebranded him into Maria Sinukuan, the diwata or mountain goddess associated with Mount Arayat in Pampanga, Philippines, and later became a prominent example of the mountain goddess motif in Philippine mythology; other prominent examples being Maria Makiling of Los Baños and Maria Cacao of Cebu.

Captain Barbell is a Filipino superhero created by writer, Mars Ravelo and artist Jim Fernandez. His characteristics are similar to American fictional superheroes Superman, DC Comics' Captain Marvel or Shazam, and Thor but Ravelo based his backstory on Captain America. He first appeared in Pinoy Komiks #1 on May 23, 1963. He also appeared in Kampeon Komiks.

Suzette Sévero Doctolero is a Filipina screenwriter for film and television. She is best known for being the creator of Encantadia in 2005 and the succeeding related television series including the Encantadia 2016 reboot. She is mostly credited as screenwriter, series creator and creative consultant for GMA Network. Her other works include Amaya, Indio and My Husband's Lover. She also wrote the story for the film Let the Love Begin and became the creative consultant for the television series Alyas Robin Hood and Destined to be Yours.

Sarah Lahbati is a Swiss-born Filipino actress and reality star. She gained media attention as a finalist on the 5th season of reality show StarStruck, a Philippine overall talent show broadcast on GMA Network. Lahbati declared StarStruck V's Ultimate Female Survivors after nine weeks of the competition. Together with Steven Silva, they each won P1.5 million cash prize and an exclusive contract with GMA Network, with a minimum guarantee of P3.5 million.

Steven Joseph Silva is a Filipino-American footballer from Team Socceroo FC in the UFL Second Division. He is also an actor, chef, radio disk jockey, and the Ultimate Male Survivor of the fifth season of StarStruck. He is half-Portuguese, one-fourth Chinese and one-fourth Filipino. He is the first Mindanao representative and the oldest male contestant to win the said title.

Ellen Meriam Go Adarna-Ramsay is a Filipino former actress, model, and former internet celebrity. Her family owns various hotels, condominiums and Queensland and Madonna, a chain of motels in Cebu, Manila and Davao. They also own a temple in honor of her late grandmother. A Gravure model, Adarna has appeared in various magazine covers in the Philippines, such as Candy, FHM, Esquire, UNO, Preview, Speed and Women's Health.

<i>Aso ni San Roque</i> Philippine television series

Aso ni San Roque is a Philippine television drama fantasy series broadcast by GMA Network. Directed by Don Michael Perez, it stars Mona Louise Rey. It premiered on September 10, 2012, on the network's Telebabad line up replacing Makapiling Kang Muli. The series concluded on January 11, 2013, with a total of 90 episodes. It was replaced by Indio in its timeslot.

Indio is the 2013 Philippine television drama epic fantasy series broadcast by GMA Network. Directed by Dondon Santos, it stars Bong Revilla in the title role. It premiered on January 14, 2013 on the network's Telebabad line up replacing Aso ni San Roque. The series concluded on May 31, 2013 with a total of 97 episodes. It was replaced by Anna Karenina in its timeslot.

Thea Loise Señerez Tolentino is a Filipino actress known for her role as Ashley Mercado Alcantara in the GMA Network television drama The Half Sisters. She started her career as one of the winners of the second season of Protégé, a talent-search reality show created by GMA Network. Since then, she became a contract artist of GMA and began appearing on various dramas such as Anna Karenina, Pyra: Babaeng Apoy, Hahamakin ang Lahat and Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko. She also gained public attention for playing the villain sorcereress in Haplos (2017), which is her most villainous role up to date. Recently, she portrayed an evil mother in Madrasta (2019).

<i>Teen Gen</i> Philippine television series

Teen Gen is a Philippine television drama series broadcast by GMA Network. The series is a spin-off of the 1990s television series T.G.I.S. Directed by Mark Reyes and Albert Langitan, it stars Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews. It premiered on December 16, 2012, on the network's Sunday afternoon line up. The series concluded on June 30, 2013, with a total of 28 episodes.

Eduard Francis Ayala, professionally known as Lucho Ayala, is a Filipino actor who made his debut on GMA network's First Time and made a remarkable appearance on the fantasy series Indio when he played young Juancho Sanreal.

Kalyeserye was a soap opera parody segment that was aired live on the Filipino noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! on GMA Network. The show-within-a-show, as it had evolved, focused on AlDub, the fictional couple pairing of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza's "Yaya Dub" character in which the two only communicate through lip-syncing to various pop songs and movie audio clips as well as written messages, and interact only on the show's split-screen frame. Richards is usually based in Broadway Centrum studio of Eat Bulaga! in Quezon City, Metro Manila while Mendoza travels around to a different external location.

The Capiznons are a Visayan ethnic group native to Capiz and the surrounding areas of the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. They speak Capiceño, a Visayan language.

Vincent Magbanua is a Filipino actor appearing in films like "Palawan Fate" and "Balut Country". He also appears in the TV show "Super Ma'am". [1]
