The Malay Film Productions (MFP), also known as the Shaw Studio, is a former film studio located on Jalan Ampas in Balestier, Singapore. The studio operated from 1947 to 1969 with more than 150 movies produced, and was a major contributor to the Golden Age of Malay Cinema. [1] [2] Many of the films are critically acclaimed, a significant number of which involved P. Ramlee as actor, director, writer or composer. [3]

The following is an incomplete list of films produced by MFP (1947–1969). [4] Also included are early Malay films (1937–1941) produced under the Shaw Brothers banner before they formed MFP. [5]

Shaw Organisation is a film distribution company and cinema chain founded by brothers Runme Shaw and Run Run Shaw who went to Singapore in the 1920s to expand their family business founded by Runje Shaw. The company originally operated as a distributor for the Shaw brothers' Tianyi Film Company in Shanghai. Run Run Shaw later moved to Hong Kong in the 1950s to run Shaw Brothers Studio, whilst Runme Shaw stayed in Singapore to continue Shaw Organisation's operations. Maria Menado, also known as Liesje Mandagi, is an Indonesian-born Malay actress, model, and producer who is known for her contributions to Malaysian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. At the height of her fame she was voted “Malaya’s Most Beautiful” by Times Magazine and the “Best Dressed Woman in South East Asia” by publisher United Press International. In addition to acting, she also sang and went on to direct and produce films under her own production company, Maria Menado Productions. Menado is Minahasan and was born in Manado, Dutch East Indies.

Pontianak is a 1957 Malay horror film directed by Indian film director Balakrishna Narayana Rao, popularly known as B.N. Rao, and starring Maria Menado and M. Amin. Based on the Malay folktales of a blood-sucking ghost born from a woman who dies in childbirth, the smash hit premiered on 27 April 1957 and screened for almost three months at the local Cathay cinemas. Its success spawned two other sequels, Dendam Pontianak and Sumpah Pontianak. It is also said to have launched the Pontianak genre in Malaysia and Singapore, with rival Shaw producing its own Pontianak trilogy and several movies of the same genre were also made in Malaysia.

<i>Kongsi Raya</i> (film) 2022 Malaysian comedy drama film

Kongsi Raya is a 2022 Malaysian Malay-language comedy drama film. It tells the story of a Chinese chef who is in love with a Malay TV producer, but their relationship faces objections from both of their long-feuding chef fathers. Things gets out of hand when the fathers decide to rival in a live TV cooking competition showdown.
