Motherwell Football Club are a Scottish professional association football club based in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. The club compete in the Scottish Premiership, Scotland's Top Flight, and have done so since 1984. The club was formed in 1886 as part of a merger between Alpha and Glencairn. [1]

Motherwell is a large town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Geographically the River Clyde separates Motherwell from Hamilton to the west whereas the South Calder Water separates Motherwell from Carfin to the north-east and New Stevenston and Bellshill towards the north. Motherwell is also geographically close to Wishaw to the south-east.

Scottish Football League former league in Scotland

The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL represented the top level of football in Scotland. After 1998, the SFL represented levels 2 to 4 of the Scottish football league system. In June 2013, the SFL merged with the SPL to form the Scottish Professional Football League.

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) was the top level league competition for professional football clubs in Scotland. The league was founded in 1998, when it broke away from the Scottish Football League (SFL). It was abolished in 2013, when the SPL and SFL merged to form the new Scottish Professional Football League, with its top division being known as the Scottish Premiership. A total of 19 clubs competed in the SPL, but only the Old Firm clubs, Celtic and Rangers won the league championship.

Scottish Premiership mens association football top division

The Scottish Premiership, known for sponsorship reasons as the Ladbrokes Premiership, is the top division of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), the league competition for men's professional football clubs in Scotland. The Scottish Premiership was established in July 2013, after the SPFL was formed by a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League. Sixteen clubs have played in the Scottish Premiership since its creation in the 2013–14 season. Celtic are the current league champions, being the only league champion to date since its establishment.

Notes

Marc Fitzpatrick is a Scottish professional footballer who plays for Airdrieonians as a left winger or left back. He has previously played for Motherwell, Ross County, Queen of the South and Greenock Morton.

Iain John Ferguson is a Scottish former professional football striker. He developed a reputation for scoring important and from his powerful right foot shot, sometimes spectacular goals. He scored in a domestic cup final winning team with both Rangers and Motherwell. His goals against high-profile opponents in Europe include for Dundee United in away games at F.C. Barcelona and Borussia Mönchengladbach en route to his appearance in the 1987 UEFA Cup Final.

The 2007–08 Scottish Premier League season was the tenth season of the Scottish Premier League. It began on 4 August 2007 and was originally due to end on 18 May 2008. Due to the death of Phil O'Donnell and extremely poor weather causing the postponement of fixtures during the winter, as well as a backlog of Rangers fixtures and their progression to the UEFA Cup Final, the SPL decided to move the final round of fixtures back four days to 22 May 2008. It was the first season under the sponsorship of the Clydesdale Bank.

Lanarkshire derby
