Species in six subgenera of Plasmodium infect birds - Bennettinia , Giovannolaia , Haemamoeba , Huffia , Novyella and Papernaia . [1] Giovannolaia appears to be a polyphytic group and may be subdivided in the future. [2]

Notes:

Sporogeny of P. circumflexum but not transmission has been recorded in Mansonia perturbans .

Avian malaria notes

A number of additional species have been described in birds - P. centropi, P. chloropsidis, P. gallinuae, P. herodialis, P. heroni, P. mornony, P. pericorcoti and P. ploceii - but the suggested speciation was based at least in part on the idea - 'one host - one species'. It has not been possible to reconcile the descriptions with any of the currently recognised species, and these are not currently regarded as valid species. As further investigations are made into this genus these species may be resurrected.

A species P. japonicum has been reported [17] but this appears to be the only report of this species and should therefore be regarded of dubious validity.

Leucocytozoon Genus of protists

Leucocytozoon is a genus of parasitic alveolates belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa.

Plasmodium forresteri is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium.

Haemoproteus Genus of single-celled organisms

Haemoproteus is a genus of alveolates that are parasitic in birds, reptiles and amphibians. Its name is derived from Greek: Haima, "blood", and Proteus, a sea god who had the power of assuming different shapes. The name Haemoproteus was first used in the description of H. columbae in the blood of the pigeon Columba livia by Kruse in 1890. This was also the first description of this genus. Two other genera — Halteridium and Simondia — are now considered to be synonyms of Haemoproteus.

Plasmodium juxtanucleare is a species of parasite in the family Plasmodiidae. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are birds.

Plasmodium circumflexum is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium subgenus Giovannolaia.

Plasmodium hermani is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium subgenus Huffia. As in all Plasmodium species, P. hermani has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are birds.

Plasmodium vaughani is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium, and the type species of the subgenus Novyella. As in all Plasmodium species, P. vaughani has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are birds.

Plasmodium alaudae is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium.

Râpa Roșie

Râpa Roșie is a protected area, a natural monument of national interest in Alba County, Romania. It is a geological and botanical reserve, located in the extreme southwest of the Secașelor Plateau, on the right bank of the river Secașul Mare, about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Sebeș. With a size of approximately 24 hectares, the reserve is classified as IUCN Category III.

Plasmodium unalis is a parasite of the genus Plasmodium subgenus Novyella. As in all Plasmodium species, P. unalis has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are birds.

Plasmodium homonucleophilum is a parasitic apicomplexan of the genus Plasmodium, subgenus Novyella whose parasitic hosts are birds.
