The league comprises 12 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Syrian League 1st Division. The Tunisian Cup, and formerly known as Tunisian President Cup (1956–2011), is the premier knockout football competition in Tunisian football, organized annually by the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), which is considered the second most important national title after the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1. The reigning champions are Stade Tunisien, who won their seventh title at the 2023–24 season.

The Ligue Professionelle 2 is the second football level in Tunisia, under Ligue Professionelle 1 which is the top level of Tunisian football. Contested by 24 clubs, divided in two groups, playing each other twice during the season, the top two teams are promoted at the end of the season, whilst the bottom two teams are relegated to the Ligue Professionnelle 3.

The 2008–09 Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 was the 83rd season of top-tier football in Tunisia. It began on 8 August 2008 and concluded on 13 May 2009. The competition saw the return of two previous participants, Avenir Sportif de Kasserine and Espoir Sportif de Hammam-Sousse from Ligue Professionnelle 2. Espérance de Tunis won the championship while previous year's winnersClub Africain finished in second place.

ES Sétif, an Algerian professional association football club, has gained entry to Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions on several occasions.
