John the Exarch was a medieval Bulgarian scholar, writer and translator, one of the most important men of letters working at the Preslav Literary School at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century. He was active during the reign of Boris I (852–889) and his son Simeon I (893–927). His most famous work is the compilation Shestodnev that consists of both translations of earlier Byzantine authors and original writings. He's canonized in the Russian Orthodox Church and his memory is honoured on the 13 August [O.S. 31 July]. In a manuscripts of the Gospels, held in the National Library of Serbia, an alternative date is given, namely — 13 February [O.S. 31 January].

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Voydan Popgeorgiev – Chernodrinski</span>

Voydan Popgeorgiev – Chernodrinski, , January 15, 1875 in Selci, Ottoman Empire, – January 8, 1951, Sofia, Bulgaria) was a Bulgarian playwright and dramatist from the region of Macedonia. His pseudonym is derived from Black Drin, a river flowing near his home village. Today he is considered an ethnic Macedonian writer in North Macedonia and as a figure who laid the foundations of the Macedonian theatre and the dramatic arts.

Armenians are the fifth largest minority, after Russians, in Bulgaria, numbering 6,552 according to the 2011 census, down from 10,832 in 2001, while Armenian organizations estimate up to 80,000. Armenians have lived in the Balkans since no later than the 5th century, when they moved there as part of the Byzantine cavalry. Since then, the Armenians have had a continuous presence in Bulgarian lands and have often played an important part in the history of Bulgaria from early Medieval times until the present.

Capital punishment in Bulgaria was abolished on December 12, 1998 with the last execution, that of attempted saboteur Georgi Alinski, having been carried out on November 4, 1989. The Parliament of Bulgaria had introduced a moratorium on July 7, 1990 and protocol number six of the European Convention on Human Rights came into force on October 1, 1999.

The Church of St Nicholas is a small medieval Eastern Orthodox church in the southwestern Bulgarian town of Sapareva Banya, which is part of Kyustendil Province. Originally either the property of a local notable or attached to a larger church, it was constructed anytime from the 11th to the 14th century.
