The top level of women's cricket in England has undergone a number of structural changes. These changes have resulted in a number of teams becoming defunct, often being replaced by multiple teams covering smaller areas.
The teams listed below competed in either the Women's Area Championship (1980–1996) or the Women's County Championship (1997–2019). Although many of the teams listed played matches before these competitions, only the seasons in which they participated in these competitions are included in the table.

Charlotte Marie Edwards is an English former cricketer and current cricket coach and commentator. She played primarily as a right-handed batter. She appeared in 23 Test matches, 191 One Day Internationals and 95 Twenty20 Internationals for England between 1996 and 2016. She played domestic cricket in England for East Anglia, Kent, Hampshire and Southern Vipers, as well as overseas for Northern Districts, Western Australia, Perth Scorchers, South Australia and Adelaide Strikers.
Cricket is one of the most popular sports in England, and has been played since the 16th century. Marylebone Cricket Club, based at Lord's, developed the modern rules of play and conduct. The sport is administered by the England and Wales Cricket Board and represented at an international level by the England men's team and England women's team. At a domestic level, teams are organised by county, competing in tournaments such as the County Championship, Royal London One-Day Cup, T20 Blast and the Women's Twenty20 Cup. Recent developments include the introduction of a regional structure for women's cricket and the establishment of The Hundred for both men's and women's cricket. Recreational matches are organised on a regional basis, with the top level being the ECB Premier Leagues.
The Women's County Championship, known since 2014 as the Royal London Women's One-Day Cup, was a women's cricket competition organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board. It was the women's equivalent of the County Championship, although it operated as a 50-over limited overs cricket competition with teams organised into a number of divisions. It was introduced in 1997 to replace the Women's Area Championship.
The Lancashire Women's cricket team is the women's representative cricket team for the English historic county of Lancashire. They play their home games at various grounds across the county, including Beaconsfield Road, Widnes. They are coached by Chris Chambers and captained by Eleanor Threlkeld. They won both the County Championship and the Twenty20 Cup in 2017. Lancashire have links with Cumbria, with some players playing for both sides, as well as some of their players making up a North Representative XI in 2021 and 2022. They are partnered with the regional side North West Thunder.
The Cheshire Women's cricket team is the women's representative cricket team for the English historic county of Cheshire. They joined the Women's County Championship in 1998 and competed in the tournament until 2016, as well as competing in the Women's Twenty20 Cup between 2009 and 2019. The team no longer competes at senior county level. They are partnered with the regional side North West Thunder.
The Hertfordshire Women's cricket team is the women's representative cricket team for the English historic county of Hertfordshire. They play their home games at various grounds across the county, including Knebworth Park, Knebworth and London Road, Tring. They are captained by Kezia Hassall. In 2019, they played in Division Three of the final season of the Women's County Championship, and in 2021 won the East Group of the Women's Twenty20 Cup. They are partnered with the regional side Sunrisers.
Moss Lane is a cricket ground in Moss Lane, Alderley Edge, Cheshire. The ground is surrounded on all four sides by residential housing. The ground is used by Alderley Edge Cricket Club. It is also a venue for tennis, squash and field hockey.
Macclesfield Cricket Club Ground is a cricket ground in Victoria Road, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. A small ground, it is bordered to the east by Macclesfield District General Hospital and to the south and west by housing. The ground is used by Macclesfield Cricket Club. Field hockey and lawn bowls are also played at the ground.
The Leicestershire Women's cricket team, officially the Leicestershire and Rutland Women's cricket team since 2010, is the women's representative cricket team for the English historic counties of Leicestershire and Rutland. They play their home games at various grounds across the two counties, often in Loughborough, Leicester or Empingham. They are captained by Rebecca Brooker. In 2019, they played in Division Three of the final season of the Women's County Championship, and have since competed in the Women's Twenty20 Cup. They are partnered with the East Midlands regional side The Blaze.
England Counties XV is a representative rugby union team, formed in 2002, open to English players who play in the County Championship and the third tier of the English rugby union system. Players from the Premiership and RFU Championship are ineligible.
The West Midlands Women's cricket team was the women's representative cricket team for the West Midlands. They competed in the Women's Area Championship from 1980 to 1996 and in the Women's County Championship from 1997 to 1999, after which they were replaced by Staffordshire. They won the Area Championship in 1982, and competed in Division One of the County Championship in their final season of existence.
The Australian women's cricket team toured England 8 July – 29 August 1987 to contest The Women's Ashes for the tenth time. Australia won the three match Test series 1–0 to retain the Ashes.
Emma Louise Lamb is an English cricketer who plays for Lancashire Women, North West Thunder and Manchester Originals, and has previously played for Lancashire Thunder. Lamb is a batting all-rounder, and bowls off spin. She made her international debut for the England women's cricket team in September 2021.
The 2012 Women's Twenty20 Cup was the 4th cricket Women's Twenty20 Cup tournament. It took place in July and August, with 36 teams taking part: 33 county teams plus Wales, Ireland and the Netherlands. Sussex Women won the Twenty20 Cup, beating Berkshire Women in the final, achieving their first T20 title. The tournament ran alongside the 50-over 2012 Women's County Championship.
The East Anglia Women's cricket team was the women's representative cricket team for East Anglia. They competed in the Women's Area Championship from 1980 to 1996 and in the Women's County Championship from 1997 to 2000, after which they were replaced by Hertfordshire. They reached the final of the Women's Area Championship in 1982, and competed in Division Two of the County Championship in their final season of existence.
The Women's Area Championship was a women's cricket competition organised by the Women's Cricket Association that ran from 1980 until 1996. It operated as a 55-over limited overs cricket competition, with teams organised into a number of groups, often with a final. It was replaced in 1997 by the Women's County Championship.
The Australian women's cricket team toured England between May and August 1976. The test series against England women's cricket team was played for the Women's Ashes, which England were defending. The series was drawn 0–0, meaning that England retained the Ashes. England won the three-match ODI series 2–1. The second ODI, won by England, was the first women's cricket match ever played at Lord's.
Alexandra Louise MacDonald is an English cricketer who plays as an all-rounder, batting left-handed and bowling right-arm medium. She has played domestic cricket for Gloucestershire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, North Representative XI, Lincolnshire and Northern Diamonds.
Laura Elizabeth Jackson is an English cricketer who currently plays for Lancashire, North West Thunder and Manchester Originals. An all-rounder, she is a right-handed batter and right-arm medium bowler. She has previously played for Cheshire and Cumbria.
