Wad Madani or Madani is the capital of the Al Jazirah state in east-central Sudan. Wad Madani lies on the west bank of the Blue Nile, nearly 85 miles (136 km) southeast of Khartoum. It is linked by rail to Khartoum and is the center of a cotton-growing region. The city is also the center of local trade in wheat, peanuts, barley, and livestock. It is also headquarters of the Irrigation Service. In 2008, its population was 345,290. It is the home of the Al Jazirah University, the second biggest public university in Sudan. Further, there is Wad Medani Ahlia University, a private university.
Before the independence of South Sudan, the States of Sudan were subdivided into 133 districts. With the adoption of the Interim National Constitution of Sudan and the Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, the ten states of South Sudan are, however, now divided into counties. Al-Ittihad Sports Club also known as Ittihad Wad Madani is a Sudanese football club based in Wad Madani. They played in the top division in Sudanese football, Sudan Premier League. Their home stadium is Stade Wad Medani. Their rival is Ahli Madani, a team which is in the same city as Itthad Madani. The derby in Madani is called Madani Derby, which is one of the biggest derby in Sudan.
The Khartoum League began in 1952 and was a famous historical regional championship in Sudan. The teams playing in it were those from the three cities of the capital Khartoum; Khartoum, Bahri, and Omdurman.
Al-Ahli Sports Club also known as Al-Ahli Wad Medani is a football club in Wad Medani, Sudan. They played in the top level of Sudanese professional football, the Sudan Premier League. Their rival is Ittihad Madani, a team also based in Wad Medani Al-Ahli Founded in 1928
Demba Barry is a Malian footballer. He currently plays as a defender for the Algerian Championnat National club ES Sétif. He scored his first goal for Al-Hilal in a match which Al-Hilal beat Al-Ahli, Wad Medani 2–1 and in the CAF Champions League he scored against Al-Merreikh SC in a match which finished 3–1. He scored 2 goals against El-Merriekh in the last 6 meetings between them
The 2009 CECAFA U-17 Championship was the 2nd edition of the CECAFA U-17 Championship organized bt CECAFA (Council of East and Central Africa Football Association. The second edition of the CEFAFA U-17 Championship, all games were originally to be played in Nairobi, Kenya but have since been moved to Sudan. due to financial reasons, the Sudanese FA and El Merreikh Investment Group have agreed to sponsor the tournament.
The 2009 Sudan Premier League is the 38th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on 18 February 2009 with a 1–1 draw between Al-Mourada and Merghani Kassala. For the 2009 season, the number of teams has been expanded from 12 to 13 teams. Al-Merreikh are the defending champions.
The 2008 Sudan Premier League was the 37th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on February 21 with Al-Ittihad 1-0 win over Amal Atbara, and concluded on November 17 with 1-1 draw between Al-Hilal Omdurman and Al-Merreikh. Al-Merreikh were crowned champions.
The 2010 Sudan Premier League was the 39th edition of the highest club level football competition in Sudan. The competition started on 2010-02-20. For the 2010 season, the number of teams has been expanded from 13 to 14 teams. Al-Hilal Omdurman are the defending champions.
The 2011 African Nations Championship was the second edition of the African Nations Championship tournament. Each participating nation was represented mostly by players who play in their respective local divisions. The competition was hosted in Sudan from February 4 to 25, 2011. Tunisia won their first title by defeating Angola in the final 3–0.
