As of 2023, it had 13,015 inhabitants. World Heritage Site the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, established in 1781, is located in the city.

A grietman was a judge and administrator of a local district; this role was partly a forerunner of the current rural mayor in the province of Friesland, and partly the forerunner of a judge. East of the Lauwers river these judges were often referred to as 'redjeva' and west of the Lauwers river as 'grietman'.
Marsum or Marssum is a village in Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,052 in January 2017. Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality.
Harm Haijo Apotheker is a Dutch politician for the Democraten 66 party. He was mayor of several Dutch townships, including Leeuwarden. From 1998 to 1999 Apotheker was Minister of Agriculture in the Second Kok cabinet, but he couldn't find his way in the national political arena. He resigned in 1999 and returned to his previous role as mayor in various townships.
Christiaan "Chris" Arlman was a Dutch politician of the Labour Party (PvdA). During 26 years he was the mayor of four different municipalities, and the chairman of two professional football clubs. He is noted for developing wellness tourism to Nieuweschans, being the first mayor of a united Pekela, for expanding the sea port of Harlingen, and for handling major budget crises at BV Veendam and Cambuur Leeuwarden.
Welgelegen or Tjepkema's Molen is a smock mill in Heerenveen, Friesland, Netherlands, which was built in 1849 and has been restored to working order. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, No. 21171.
Sybrand van Haersma Buma is a Dutch politician serving as Mayor of Leeuwarden since 2019. Until 2019, he was a member of the House of Representatives from 2002 who also served as the parliamentary leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) from 2010 and as the leader of his party from 2012.
Pieter Enneüs Heerma is a Dutch politician. As a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) he has been a member of the House of Representatives since 20 September 2012.
Boezemmolen is a smock mill in Tijnje, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1856 and dismantled in 1911. Formerly converted to residential use, the mill is under restoration. It is listed as a Rijksmonument.

Drs. Ferdinandus Johannes Maria Crone is a Dutch politician. He was born in Dordrecht in 1954. On 15 November 2007 he became Mayor of Leeuwarden. He remained mayor until 26 of August 2019 when he was succeeded by Sybrand van Haersma Buma. As of February 2020 he is a member of the Senate.
Bernhardus "Bernhard" van Haersma Buma was a Dutch politician and writer. As politician he was part of Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU) and later CDA. He was mayor of Workum and Sneek.
Jan Geersing was a Dutch politician of the Reformed Political League and later Christian Union, who served as a member of the Friesland Parliament and as Mayor of Ferwerderadeel.
