John W. Dorsey will come acting chancellor of the University of Maryland August 16 and will serve until a permanent chief officer of the College Park campus is found. Dr. Wilson H. Elkins, president of the university, named the former vice chancellor for administrative affairs to fill the vacancy created when Chancellor Charles E. Bishop resigned in June.
The University of Maryland Board of Regents yesterday named Robert L. Gluckstern, a vice chancellor and provost at the University of Massachusetts, as the new chancellor of the university's College Park campus. The regents unanimously proved the appointment at their monthly meeting at the university's Law School here... He will take over the chancellorship around July 1, Wilson H. Elkins, the president of the university said.

Dr. Slaughter is married to the former Ida Bernice Johnson and is the father of two children. He succeeds Dr. Robert L. Gluckstern, a physicist who announced last September that he was resigning as to resume full-time research and teaching. Dr. William E. Kirwan, a professor who currently is vice chancellor for academic affairs, will serve as acting chancellor until Dr. Slaughters available.
Dr. John Brooks Slaughter, director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), was named chancellor of the University of Maryland yesterday... The native of Topeka, was appointed director of the National Science Foundation- -the federal agency that allots research grantsby former President Carter in 1980. Dr. Slaughter, a Chevy Chase resident, will continue to serve as director of the agency until a replacement is found. He is expected to assume the duties of chancellor by January 15, 1983.
Slaughter is stepping down as chancellor of the nation's seventh largest college campus to become president of Occidental College, a tiny, prestigious private liberal arts school in Los Angeles... Slaughter, who took over Nov. 2, 1982, as College Park chancellor, said Occidental attracted him because of its commitment to the cultural and ethnic diversity of Los Angeles...
The Board of Regents of the University of Maryland system today hired former mathematics professor William English Kirwan as president of the College Park campus. Kirwan, 50, has been acting president of the campus since John Slaughter resigned last spring.
University of Maryland President William E. Kirwan confirmed Monday he is leaving his job to become president of Ohio State University. Kirwan said he wanted a fresh challenge after nine years at the helm of the state's flagship institution... Kirwan, who started at College Park as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1964, said he will remain in the job through the spring semester. His resignation is effective July 1.
In a letter to the UM community today, C.D. Mote, Jr., president of the campus and a professor of mechanical engineering at the Clark School, announced he will be retiring as president effective August 31.
Clifford M. Kendall, chair of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents, today announced the appointment of Wallace D. Loh as president of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)Loh is currently executive vice president and provost of The University of Iowa. His appointment as president of UMCP, USM's flagship institution, is effective November 1, 2010... Loh will succeed C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr., who will step down from the presidency on August 31 after leading the university through a 12-year period of steady advancement to become one of the nation's top public universities. Mote will continue at the university in his academic appointment as Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Chancellor Kirwan has appointed Nariman Farvardin, provost of UMCP, to serve as interim president until Loh arrives November 1.
The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents has appointed Darryll J. Pines, PhD, as the 34th president of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). Pines has spent 25 years on the College Park campus and is dean of the university's A. James Clark School of Engineering. His appointment is effective July 1.
