These are the former and current vice-chancellors and principals (positions which have been merged since 1948 [1] ), and chancellors of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Vice-chancellors and principals

The vice-chancellor and principal is the head of the university, supported by five deputy vice-chancellors. Prior to 1948, the positions were separate, with the position of vice-chancellor being inconsequential.

The chancellor is the titular head of the university who, in the name of the university, confers all degrees.

He came from a well-known Afrikaner family; his uncle, also Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr but known affectionately as "Onze Jan" among fellow Afrikaners, was a famous figure in the Afrikaans language movement.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a public university located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The University of Johannesburg came into existence on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University. Prior to the merger, the Daveyton and Soweto campuses of the former Vista University had been incorporated into RAU. As a result of the merger of Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), it is common for alumni to refer to the university as RAU. The vice-chancellor and principal of UJ is Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi who took office on 1 January 2023. Between 2018 and 2022, UJ's vice-chancellor and principal was Tshilidzi Marwala.

Transvaal University College was a multi-campus public research university in South Africa which gave rise to the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Pretoria.

Adam Mahomed Habib is a South African academic administrator serving as Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London since 1 January 2021. He served as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa between 1 June 2013, when the term of his predecessor Loyiso Nongxa ended, and 1 January 2021. He is also a former deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Johannesburg.

Loyiso Nongxa is a South African mathematician, the current Chairperson of the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) and a former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits).

Holy Trinity Catholic Church is a Catholic parish church located in Braamfontein in north-central Johannesburg.

Jillian Beryl Adler née Smidt is a South African Professor of Mathematics education at the University of the Witwatersrand and the President of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (2017–2020). Adler's work has focused on the teaching and learning of mathematics particularly in multilingual classrooms.

Ruksana Osman is Professor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Before then, she was the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. She is also the former Head of the School of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is an elected member of the Academy of Science, South Africa.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Salome Maswime</span> South African clinician and health expert

Salome Maswime is a South African clinician and global health expert. She is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and the Head of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town. She advocates for women's health rights, equity in surgical and maternal care, and providing adequate health services to remote and underserved populations. She advises and consults for many institutions, including the World Health Organization. In 2017, she was honored with the Trailblazer and Young Achiever Award. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Irvy (Igle) Gledhill is a South African physicist at the University of Witwatersrand, School of Mechanical, Industrial & Aeronautical Engineering, in Johannesburg.

Belinda Bozzoli was a South African author, academic, sociologist, and politician. She was deputy vice-chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand for a period from 2002, having headed its school of social sciences. In 2014 Bozzoli was elected a member of the South African parliament for the Democratic Alliance. From 2019 she served as Shadow Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">J. M. Gerald Gordon</span> South African architect (1933-2016)

Joseph Moses Gerald Gordon was a prominent South African architect, Professor (1976–1994) at the University of Witwatersrand School of Architecture, and Honorary Research Fellow of the university (1994-2016). He is best known for inventing the "Thin-Skin" building method. His papers and drawings are archived at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Architecture & Planning. He was president of the Transvaal Institute of Architects in 1978 and 1979. His residential home was commemorated with a "Blue Plaque" by the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation in 2021.

Ellen Hellmann was a South African social anthropologist and the first woman to graduate with a D.Phil. degree from the University of Witwatersrand.

Zeblon Zenzele Vilakazi has been Vice Chancellor of the Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa since 1 January 2021. Professor Vilakazi is a nuclear physicist. Prior to his promotion, he was Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Postgraduate Studies. He speaks French, German, Russian, Xhosa, Zulu, Siswati, Sesotho, Afrikaans and English.
