Padmarajan (23 May 1945 – 24 January 1991) was an Indian author, screenwriter, and film director. His stories deal with deceit, murder, romance, mystery, passion, jealousy, libertinism, anarchism, individualism, and the life of peripheral elements of society. Some of them are considered as among the best in Malayalam literature.

It marked Rahman's movie debut. The film was a major commercial success and was Padmarajan's first commercial hit.

The film was Padmarajan's directorial debut and the acting debut of Ashokan, who played the central character, Raman. It was one of the last black-and-white Malayalam films.

Kariyilakkattu Pole is a 1986 Indian Malayalam-language mystery thriller film written and directed by P. Padmarajan. It is based on the radio drama Sisirathil Oru Prabhatham by Sudhakar Mangalodayam, the plot follows DySP Achuthankutty who is investigating the murder of a film director, Harikrishnan. The film stars Mohanlal, Mammootty, Rahman, Sripriya, Karthika, Jalaja, and Unni Mary. The background score was composed by Johnson. A Padmarajan classic, the film is widely considered one of the best investigative thrillers ever made in Malayalam.

Peruvazhiyambalam is a Malayalam novel written by Padmarajan. In 1978, it was adapted for a feature film also called Peruvazhiyambalam directed by Padmarajan. The novel is about teenager Raman who kills Prabhakaran Pillai, a local thug, in self-defense. It describes his escape from the village by the help of Prabhakaran Pillai's enemies and how he comes to terms with life at the shelter provided by them. The novel explores the teenage mind and its guilt towards crime and its aftermath.

Padmarajan Award is instituted by Padmarajan Memorial Trust in memory of author and filmmaker P. Padmarajan. The award was initially given in two categories, the awards for Best Short Story and Best Feature Film produced in Malayalam language. Now there are four categories: Best Short Story, Best Novel, Best Director and Best Screenwriter.

Socrates Krishnan Valath, is an Indian novelist and short story writer, working in Malayalam literature. His short story anthology, Nyayavithi, was selected for the Padmarajan Award in 2014. He is also a recipient of the Kerala State Television Award in 2003, C. Ayyappan Award in 2015 and a Certificate of Merit at the Annual Akashvani Awards in 2017.
