Winning the third place game at Eurobasket 2007 against Greece allowed Lithuania to qualify for the Olympic basketball tournament at Beijing 2008 without competition at 2008 Pre-Olympics Tournament. The Lithuanian men's basketball team came in fourth place after being beaten by Argentina's basketball team, 87-75. [1]

Greece national basketball team national sports team

The Greece national basketball team is organized and run by the Hellenic Basketball Federation. They were runners-up in the 2006 FIBA World Championship, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semifinal. They have won EuroBasket twice; in 1987, after beating the Soviet Union 103–101 in the final in Athens and in 2005, after beating Germany with a convincing 78–62 in the final in Belgrade. Greece is currently placed eighth in the FIBA World Rankings.

The Lithuania men's national basketball team participates in FIBA's competitions. Despite Lithuania's small size, with a population of just almost 2.8 million, the country's devotion to basketball has made them a traditional force of the sport in Europe.

The Argentina national basketball team, officially nicknamed El Alma Argentina, represents Argentina in international men's basketball and is controlled by the Argentine Basketball Federation.

2008 Olympic tournament roster

Lithuanian basketball team started its preparation for the Olympics at the end of June, 2008. After couple of training camps and preolympic friendly matches the national team was selected.

Rimas Kurtinaitis Lithuanian basketball player and coach

Rimas Kurtinaitis is a Lithuanian professional basketball coach, and a retired professional basketball player, who was a member of the senior Soviet and Lithuanian national basketball teams during his playing career. He is currently the head coach for Khimki. At a height of 1.96 m (6'5") tall, during his playing career, he played at the shooting guard position. He is the only non-NBA player to ever participate at the NBA All-Star Weekend's Three-Point Contest, doing so in 1989.

Robertas Kuncaitis Lithuanian basketball player-coach

Robertas Kuncaitis is a Lithuanian basketball coach. He was a head coach of Neptūnas and assistant coach of the Lithuania national basketball team in the 2010–2011 season. On 6 May 2011, Neptūnas terminated the contract with Robertas Kuncaitis because of poor results.

Recognized as one of the best European players of all time, he won the Euroscar six times, and the Mr. Europa Award twice. Playing the center position, Sabonis won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics, in South Korea, for the Soviet Union, and later earned bronze medals at the 1992 Olympic Games and 1996 Olympic Games, while representing Lithuania. He retired from professional basketball in 2005. Sabonis was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers, in the first round of the 1986 NBA draft, but he did not play his first NBA game until the age of 31, in 1995.
