Lithuanian Liberal Youth (Lithuanian : Lietuvos liberalus jaunimas , LLJ), is a political youth organization in Lithuania. It is the financially and organisationally independent of any political party. However, some prominent members of LLJ participate in active politics as representatives of political parties.

History

The organisation was unofficially established as Vilniaus liberalaus jaunimo klubas on 12 January 1991 and was officially registered on 1 December 1991. After being affiliated with Lithuanian Liberal Union until 1994, the organisation later decided to become an independent one. Even after this split many members of LLJ as Jonas Čekuolis, Gintaras Steponavičius and Aušrinė Armonaitė were elected to municipal councils and the Seimas as members of Lithuanian Liberal Union, Liberal and Centre Union and Liberal Movement.

Currently the Lithuanian Liberal Youth has 27 local sections. Every branch has a local board and organizes regular general meetings, where local board members are elected and policy is decided. Every local member has the right to vote at the local general meetings. The sections are:

Saulius Skvernelis is a Lithuanian politician who served as prime minister of Lithuania between 2016 and 2020. He had previously served as police commissioner, and was Minister of the Interior from 2014 to 2016. Though he was an independent politician, he was backed by the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and was a member of its parliamentary group until 2022, as a result of which he became the first head of government in European history primarily backed by a green party.

Jonas Steponavičius was a Lithuanian Roman Catholic priest active in Lithuanian cultural and political life. He was ordained a priest in 1906 and earned Ph.D. in psychology in 1912. He returned to Lithuania and became a priest in the Church of St. Johns, Vilnius. He joined Lithuanian cultural life, becoming the first chairman of the Lithuanian Education Society Rytas which established and maintained Lithuanian-language one-room schools. His attempt at holding Lithuanian-language service at the Church of St. Johns caused Polish protests and he was reassigned to the Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit and later to Semeliškės. During World War I, he served as a military chaplain in the Caucasus Campaign. After returning to Lithuania, he joined the Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party and was elected four times to the Seimas (parliament) from 1920 to the December 1926 coup d'état that brought the regime of Antanas Smetona. He retired from politics and became a school director in Zarasai and a teacher in Utena. In mid-1944, Steponavičius was one of the organizers of the Fatherland Defense Force, a short-lived military unit formed to combat approaching Soviet forces. He retreated to Germany where he died in 1947.

Aušrininkai was a semi-formal socialist student movement in Lithuania that formed around the Aušrinė magazine. Established in 1910, it was the first youth organization in Lithuania.

The Lithuanian order of precedence is a nominal and symbolic hierarchy of important positions within the Government of Lithuania. Administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the hierarchy does not determine the order of succession for the office of President of the Republic of Lithuania, which is instead specified by the Constitution of Lithuania.

Aušrinė Armonaitė is a Lithuanian politician who is the current chairperson of the Freedom Party since 2019. Previously a member of the Liberal Movement and a vice chairperson from 2017 until 2018, Armonaitė was first elected to the Seimas in the 2016 parliamentary election. In 2018, she resigned from the Liberal Movement and later joined the social liberal and progressive Freedom Party. She led the party into the 2020 parliamentary election, where the party won 11 seats and became represented in the Seimas for the first time.
