Liu Youju (born in 1955, Jiexi, Guangdong, China) is a contemporary Chinese art critic, calligrapher, avant-garde artist, and practitioner of "illusionist painting". [1]

In his early years, he was engaged in poetry, prose, and literary criticism. Some of his poems were included in the Selection of Contemporary Poems by A Thousand of Authors (Chinese: "當代千家詩選粹"). [2]

In 2011, he left the Chinese Calligrapher's Association [3] and later founded illusionist painting. [4] His illusionist paintings have been exhibited at the Nixon Presidential Museum in the U.S., [5] the British Museum, [6] the Louvre Museum of Art in France, [7] and the art gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence (Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze) in Italy. [8]

In 2016, Liu organized a personal workshop on his personal artworks at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence. [9]

In 2017, a solo art exhibition was held at Centre Georges-Pompidou, and a speech was delivered during an art research seminar at the same center. [10]

In 2019, the Guangdong artist Liu Youju was awarded the Michelangelo Prize, making him the first Chinese artist to receive this honor in the field of painting. [11]

In 2021, Liu Youju's inauguration ceremony as an honorary fellow of the Italian Academy of Art took place in Florence. [11]

In celebration of Chong Hwa's Schools 100th anniversary, he has contributed his calligraphic inscriptions on its cover for the school's commemorative stamps.

Liu Haisu was a prominent twentieth-century Chinese painter and a noted art educator. He excelled in Chinese painting and oil painting. He was one of the four pioneers of Chinese modern art who earned the title of "The Four Great Academy Presidents".

Mat(tijs) Visser studied architecture in Delft, the Netherlands and is since then an organiser of performances and art exhibitions. He was head of exhibitions at Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf for eight years (2001–08), curated historical exhibitions and is best known for his Artempo exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny in Venice. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Ettore Tito</span> Italian artist (1859-1941)

Ettore Tito was an Italian artist particularly known for his paintings of contemporary life and landscapes in Venice and the surrounding region. He trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and from 1894 to 1927 was the Professor of Painting there. Tito exhibited widely and was awarded the Grand Prize in painting at the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. In 1926 he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Italy. Tito was born in Castellammare di Stabia in the province of Naples and died in Venice, the city which was his home for most of his life.

Liu Ye is a Beijing-based contemporary Chinese painter known for his bright-hued paintings of childlike female figures, his favorite cartoon character Miffy the bunny and works inspired by Piet Mondrian. Liu Ye is part of a generation of artists who grew up during the Cultural Revolution. However, unlike most acclaimed Chinese contemporary art, his works have little political implications. Instead, he prefers to use a universal language to depict his inner world. His work has been exhibited extensively in China, Europe and the United States.

Liu Ding is a Chinese artist and curator based in Beijing. Liu’s artistic practices range from installation, painting, photography, and theatre set design and production, whereas his professional skills vary from magazine editorial, television production, and curatorial work.

Ugo Capocchini was an Italian artist. He won many awards throughout his career, and became a Professor at the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Florence in the 1960s. In his birthplace, Barberino Val d'Elsa, a square and a community hall have been named after him.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Angolan pavilion</span> Venice Biennale national pavilion

The Angolan pavilion, representing the nation of Angola, has participated in the Venice Biennale since 2013. As one of the biennial international art exhibition's national pavilions, Angola mounts a show in a Venetian palazzo outside Venice's Giardini. The first Angolan pavilion, which featured the photography of Edson Chagas, became the first African national pavilion to receive the biennial's top prize, the Golden Lion for best national pavilion. Chagas displayed poster-sized photographs of resituated, abandoned objects and weathered architecture in the Angolan capital of Luanda. Reviewers praised the interplay between the photographed subject matter and the Italian Renaissance artwork that adorned the hosting palazzo's walls. The 2015 Biennale hosted a group show of five Angolan artists on themes of intergenerational dialogue.

Liu Gangji was a Chinese aesthetician, calligrapher, historian, painter, and philosopher. He was considered a founder of the study of the history of Chinese aesthetics. He was a distinguished professor and Director of the Institute of Aesthetics of Wuhan University. He also served as Vice President of the China Aesthetics Society.

Liu Zewen, was born in Qingdao, Shandong in 1943. He is a full-time painter of the Yantai Art Academy, national first-class artist and art professor, member of the Chinese Artists Association, visiting professor of the Academy of Fine Arts of Shandong University of Arts, professor of the Shandong Vocational College of Art & Design, consultant of the Shandong Artists Association, consultant of the Chinese Painting Figure Art Committee, committee member of the Shandong Painting Academy, member of the Shandong Chinese Painting Society, Vice President of the Shandong Mural Art Research Institute, honorary chairman of the Yantai Artists Association, and President of the Yantai Modern Art Academy.

Kinuko Emi was a Japanese painter. Emi is best known for her abstract painting in bold colors featuring the motif of four classical elements. At the 31st Venice Biennale in 1962, Emi's work was exhibited in the Japan Pavilion alongside that of four male artists, making her the first Japanese woman artist to be shown at the country's Pavilion. She had retrospective exhibitions at the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery in 1996, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura in 2004 and Himeji City Museum of Art in 2010. Emi's works are in the collection of the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, Yokohama Museum of Art, and Takamatsu Art Museum, among others. Emi's daughter, Anna Ogino, is an Akutagawa Prize-winning novelist and emeritus professor of French literature at Keio University, Tokyo, who serves as the custodian of her mother's works and legacy.

Marco Cingolani is an Italian painter. After attending art school in Como and graduating from the Brera Academy in 1984, Cingolani became part of Milan's underground scene in 1978, influencing a shift in his artistic style. He engaged with fashion and punk music, associating with artists such as Alessandro Pessoli and Stefano Arienti. Cingolani's work evolved to incorporate socio-political commentaries, particularly addressing media portrayals of historical events. He has exhibited in various institutions, including the Pecci Museum, Palazzo Strozzi, and the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea. Cingolani, who lives and works in Milan, teaches painting at the Brera Academy.
