The concert was the first Live 8 show to start, because of Japan's earlier time zone. Attendance for the concert was at maximum capacity, but with only 10,000 people attending the show at the Makuhari Messe venue, it was one of the smallest to join the global series of events. Live8 Japan organiser Lily Sobhani was given only 1 month to put the concert together, and Japan's event was announced only a week before the concert. As a result, it was unable to attract the same kind of buzz that counterpart concerts in London and Philadelphia did, but attracted international artists Björk, Good Charlotte and McFly, as well as Japanese stars Dreams Come True, Rize, Def Tech, and Do As Infinity.
Japan is the only Asian country in the G8, and the only Asian country that took part in Live 8.
Do As Infinity is a Japanese pop and rock band that formed in 1999 with three members: vocalist Tomiko Van, guitarist Ryo Owatari, and guitarist and composer Dai Nagao. The band's name is sometimes abbreviated as DAI, alluding to the fact that Do As Infinity was named after Nagao. Signed to Avex Trax, the band released their debut single "Tangerine Dream" on September 29, 1999, followed by three more singles between 1999 and 2000, which appeared on their debut album Break of Dawn (2000). In December 2000, Nagao decided to devote all his time to composing the music and no longer appeared at live events. Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a convention center in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, located just outside of Tokyo. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".

Rize is a Japanese alternative metal band formed in 1997, debuting in 2000 and currently signed with Warner Music Japan. The band currently consists of Jesse McFaddin, Nobuaki Kaneko (drums), and KenKen (bass). Their music style is a mix of nu metal, alternative rock, punk rock, hard rock and even some reggae flavor. Their song "ZERO" from Experience album has been featured on Coca-Cola commercial in Japan and Asian countries. Their single "Gunshot" has been featured in Resident Evil: Dead Aim credits.Their song "Muppet" from the album 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 was featured in the videogame Kurohyō: Ryū ga Gotoku Shinshō as the main theme of the game, and even having an instrumental version as the music that plays in the final boss fight.
Summer Sonic is an annual music festival held on one weekend in August simultaneously in both Chiba and Osaka, Japan.
